A Spanish military court jailed five Roman Catholic priests for Basque separatist activity, with penalties from 12 to 19 years. In Catalonia six priests entered the sixth day of a hunger strike supporting the Basque prisoners as police crackdown continued.
Lifetime licenses for Frederick County and Winchester residents begin July 1, valid for one year through June 30. Present licenses expire June 30. County clerk's office is in the county office building and the city clerk's office is in city hall.

U S Marines clashed with North Vietnamese forces inside the DMZ and evacuated wounded over mountains and jungles for two days. Two CH46 helicopters were shot down during the operation, with all crewmen unharmed and later joining the ground patrol. Seven Marines were wounded, four by friendly fire from a covering Air Force gunship.
The weekly casualty report shows 252 Americans killed in action, 2,125 wounded, while South Vietnamese forces and enemy ranks rise in deaths. Government troops total 457 dead with 1,391 wounded. 3,930 enemy dead reported. Since Jan 1, 1961, American deaths reach 36,043 and missing or captured rise to 1,321.

At the Paris peace talks the Viet Cong led provisional South Vietnamese government substituted the National Liberation Front with Mrs. Nguyen Thi Binh as foreign minister. Headley told the Kiwanis Club that the U S must fight to win in Vietnam and not capitulate to demonstrations on college campuses He cited troops under fire and cited U S morale concerns while praising American soldiers and calling for a stronger response against Communist aggression.
AP reports Aero Space industry sources say automated, non manned satellite tech advances yield a perfected sky spy arsenal. Deputy Defense Secretary Packard halted the manned orbiting laboratory program citing progress in unmanned systems for research communications navigation and meteorology. Integrated Satellite, first launched last August, features high resolution cameras and infrared sensors to monitor Soviet and Chinese installations and secret communications.
Early morning blaze at the Rockingham Fire Co recapping plant on Virginia 42 in Broadway caused an estimated 300000 dollars in losses. Firefighters from Harrisonburg Timberville and Broadway fought the fire shortly after midnight but were hampered by a water shortage. No injuries reported and nearby structures were spared.
