Provost Marshal General Crowder bases exemption rules under the selective craft law on a board system with no class exemptions. After final minor details, the War Department will seek Secretary Baker's approval and the President will issue the proclamation. Crowder vows political influence will not shape the boards.

In CROSS JUNCTION Virginia on June 6 a lightning bolt struck the home of G H Edwards. Minor damage reported with several window panes broken and the pump affected. Also notes social visits and a classified call for a weekend collector for the Star newspaper.
The Sarah Zane and Charley Rouss fire companies held meetings for the July 4 celebration. Chamber of Commerce cooperation is sought as Winchester and Frederick county host a booster day. Firemen from nearby cities may join the parade and contests.
An ordinance banning parking on select Winchester streets for more than twenty minutes was introduced and passed first and second readings. It excludes delivery and business vehicles in service of a business, with fines from two to five dollars by the police justice.
The Winchester branch of the Virginia War Relief Commission thanks the community for aid since its April 3 organization. It has packed and shipped over $900 in surgical dressings to central headquarters for French hospitals.

The Winchester City Council weighs a plan to upgrade 1200 sanitary closets to flyless standards. Costs split between property owners and city cleaning, urging prompt action to protect public health and attract visitors.
Reverend B Duvall Chambers of Christ Church Millwood Virginia and John W Wood of New York travel to Alaska to inspect Episcopal missions. They will go via Seattle and a long inland route to meet Archdeacon Stuck and visit multiple mission stations reaching the Arctic Circle.
City council defies health boards by defeating a 450 dollar sanitation equipment ordinance and passes a repeal of the closet installation requirement. A petition signed by 450 citizens protests the burden of closets and cleaning costs while officials cite a high local death rate of 25 per 1000.
An ordinance approved at a special Winchester Common Council meeting authorizes condemnation of a 12 foot wide strip on the north side of West Water Street from Main to Indian alley and a continuation to Indian alley. The move targets land owned by Stewart Bell and heirs of W. A. Bell to widen Water Street for public safety.

A Star reporter and Winchester Health Department verify vital records showing only 72 natural deaths in the city, challenging a claim that Winchester’s death rate was 25 per 1,000 and the highest in the nation. The check suggests the 150 annual deaths needed for that rate would exceed observed figures.
Washington reports Dr. William S. Snow says at least 3,000 American physicians must volunteer now to support a projected 500000 man army. He warns the draft will not supply enough doctors, estimating ten surgeons per 5,000 soldiers and urging rapid recruitment to ensure 5,000 surgeons are available for September mobilization.
The 5,000 ton Leyland freighter Anglian has been sunk in a probable submarine attack while en route from Boston to Liverpool. Cable advices give no crew details. The British steamer Mahobac, 3,116 tons, bound from London to Boston with cocoa and machinery, struck a mine in the English Channel and was beached on the English coast. The Mahobac was formerly the Minneapolis.
At Ysleta Texas a group of about 40 Mexican bandits attacked a patrol of the Eighth United States Cavalry stationed at the fort. Sergeant McDade led a retreat after heavy enemy fire while reinforcements arrived from El Paso. The Mexicans fled across the Rio Grande and were not pursued. General Bell ordered a full investigation.
At the Baltimore wholesale market close this afternoon spot wheat was quoted at 2.76 and corn at LSD. Local dealers offered 2.25 for wheat after the close of the Baltimore market.
The Federal Trade Commission urged Congress to place all mills producing print paper and related pulp under government operation. The proposal calls for pooling products, distributing at production cost plus a fair profit, and designating a federal agency to supervise during the war.
Mayor J. F. Ward has subscribed to the Liberty Bond loan. Miss M. A. Jones of Philadelphia visits Miss Julia Taylor at North Market street. Mr. C. W. Heater of Middletown Virginia spends the day in the city on business. Miss Edith Brown visits a friend in Charlestown West Virginia.
