Incumbent Frank Aleshire won reelection as mayor of Stanley 419 to 263 over Charles Campbell. Three of five council seats went to Campbell allies, prompting ongoing challenges over absentee ballots and alleged nonresident voting. The race spurred charges of mail ballot fraud and calls for election oversight.

U S officials monitor Hanoi for a reaction to President Nixon's North Vietnamese pull back offer. They cite negative propaganda and renewed combat offensives while awaiting Hanoi's evaluation of the Midway Summit and potential unannounced troop withdrawals.

About 100 residents attended the public hearing before the Winchester City Council to oppose the proposed 1969 Thoroughfare Plan, with most speakers criticizing the Butler Drive project. No support for the plan was voiced as council action was tabled.

More than 200 young music students from 45 states converge for a 32 day 12 nation tour. The All-Student Groups U S A includes 110 member band and 110 member chorus, with staff and chaperones bringing total to about 250. Ages 16 to 22 include three from Alaska. They register at Shenandoah Conservatory and rehearse before a free public concert Saturday evening. They depart from Dulles Airport at 7 30 p m en route to Prestwick Scotland for the first stop Tuesday in Glasgow.
Powhatan Shop in Berryville Virginia announces a summer clothing sale on Thursday June 12 and Saturday June 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event features discounted apparel for the season at the local shop.
Winchester picks three to three year terms on the School Board expiring June 30 1972. Reappointments are Mrs Ann R Whitham Central District and William E Fauver Northern District. Marvin E Gore Jr to Southern District replacing William Hollis who declined another term. Gore a former councilman insurance executive and forum founder. Council also increases Handley Library Board from seven to nine and removes the voting requirement.
Moscow accuses Beijing of inciting fresh border incidents in Sinkiang and warns the Chinese protest over a claimed casualty and kidnaping. China denounces Soviet incursions with tanks and armored cars and demands halt to alleged encroachments and the return of a kidnapped herdsman.
North Vietnamese forces attacked three U S bases south of Da Nang during the night, killing 14 Americans and wounding 68 while destroying or damaging artillery. U S Command counted 76 North Vietnamese fatalities. In the heaviest assault, sappers with flame throwers breached an American base 30 miles south of Da Nang, killing 11 and wounding 32 in close combat before withdrawing, leaving some enemy dead and captured weapons. The base sits on a key infiltration route toward Tam Ky amid ongoing relief efforts.
In Parkersburg West Virginia Susan Bailey aged 15 and Roger Bailey aged 13 face murder charges for a predawn house fire that killed their parents and ten siblings. Investigators found gasoline evidence and family tensions over Susan's dating a 17 year old cousin.
