Charles Williams was held in the police court on Saturday night facing a grand jury action in Winchester Corporation Court for alleged violation of the state’s prohibition law. He is charged with bringing into the state more liquor than allowed by law. Williams was admitted to bail in the amount of 250 dollars.
The funeral of Miss Lucy Carter McGuire, 77, long tied to Clarke county, was held at Christ Church Millwood. The Rev. B D Chambers officiated with interment at Old Chapel. Born along the James River, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Francis Howe McGuire and Mary Willing Harrison McGuire. Survived by brothers William H. McGuire of Halifax and J Edward McGuire of Millwood.

Ernest B. Kitchen has a warrant on a charge of unlawfully possessing a bull valued at about 90 dollars. Kitchen says the bull belongs to him after keeping it for months and advertising ownership without results. The case was postponed as Justice Tavenner could not be located. a new hearing date will be set.
General John J. Pershing and Walter Hines Page dined today with King George at Buckingham Palace. Pershing’s party will be joined by enlisted men invited to tour the palace tomorrow after meeting the British war staff at the Savoy.

Thirteen socialists are cited to appear before a federal grand jury in Grand Rapids Michigan for conspiring to obstruct the selective draft law. I W W leaders in northern Michigan towns are under investigation and eight have been arrested for conspiracy.
Misses Bessie and Meta Sartelle closed their music study classes with two recitals. The season was highly successful and pupils impressed parents and others with the year’s work. The first program on June 5 featured piano selections by Margarita Eagle and Rosie Poluski, among others.
In Washington labor representatives led by the American Federation of Labor pressed the President to hurry food control legislation. They warned that if bills are not passed before July first harvest, prices will rise and people may go hungry. Washington June 11 contract awards for wooden hulls were announced by the emergency fleet bureau after the earlier controversy over E A Eustis and F Huntington Clark. Sanderson and Porter of New York received ten hulls to be delivered starting April 1 1918 and every 15 days thereafter through August 1918, while Maryland Shipbuilding Company Sparrows Point Maryland received six hulls with first delivery April 30 1918 and one hull each month through September 30 1918.

A large scale recruiting drive begins across the United States to reach full war strength. The Navy and Marine Corps seek thousands, with 300000 volunteers needed overall and conscription possible if targets aren’t met. The National Guard faces the biggest hurdle, while naval facilities strain to train existing recruits.

Attorney W. Davis Conrad and partner Hopkins secured for their clients damages of 254200 plus 6777 interest in a New York Times report. McKellar, as assignee of Knapp and Kelly, claimed a 444 percent share of the contract for supplying 3100 tons of picric acid to Russia. The suit arose from a commission on the contract with the Russian government.
A Russian speaker urged violence against children during a New York gathering, prompting Morris Katz a tailor to be arrested. Sydney Wortes, a recent US Army veteran, rushed through the crowd, restrained Katz, and handed him to police. Prices paid at the Baltimore wholesale markets show spot wheat at $2.81 and corn at $1.79. Local dealers offered $2.25 for wheat after the afternoon close.
A southwest Frederick precinct slacker initially refused to register on Tuesday. Sheriff Pannett notified U.S. District Attorney Byrd by telegram seeking drastic action. The man later registered on Friday and seeks to avoid penalties, with further action undecided.
