Gas Blast Destroys Hillcrest Country Club Near Los Angeles
A gas explosion at Hillcrest country club in Los Angeles county injured five people and gutted the clubhouse. The blast shattered the roof and scattered lockers across a 50 foot arc while fire crews battled the blaze for hours. Manager John Steinberg valued the loss at 175 dollars. Olin Dutra, the club pro, escaped injury.

Chutist Leaps From Army Transport Near Memphis
A hitchhiking corporal armed with an opened parachute told police he bailed from an army transport to reach his newborn. He said he aimed to jump over Oklahoma but landed near Memphis. Patrolman R E Bennett identified him as Lee Orange of Arnadarko Oklahoma and said he was denied a furlough to see his child. Orange was handed to Army authorities.

Fire at Berryville refinery warehouse causes $5000 loss
A blaze at the Republic Oil Refinery Co. warehouse in Berryville yesterday afternoon destroyed the frame building and damaged 10 000 gallons of motor oil 9000 pounds of grease and 700 batteries along with pumps and equipment. Cause undetermined but suspected to be wiring or a compressor. Twenty volunteers battled the flames and called for aid from Charlies Town and Winchester with three Winchester fire trucks later arriving.
