Winchester Soldier May Be James Hatcher Cited
An Associated Press dispatch from France dated June 2 reports 38 American expeditionary forces members cited for conspicuous bravery. Private James Hatcher rescued a wounded comrade under shell fire, though some in Winchester believe the reference may be to Captain James Hatcher of the heavy artillery, son of Mrs. Ada S. Hatcher of Fort Loudoun Seminary. Mrs. Hatcher has heard nothing from her son since May 12. Also, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Oates returned to Baltimore after visiting relatives on East Piccadilly Street.
