Severe fighting northwest of Cheteau continues as Marut Tep on takes a village after an attack. American forces report a major advance, with units consolidating positions and press reports noting heavy clashes and shifting front lines.
American forces hold the right bank of the Marne near Chateau Thierry as Marines drive back German counterattacks after dark. They rout machine gun positions at Bouresches and Corcy, take prisoners, and report heavy artillery and gas shell fire. dawn finds the Germans retreating under relentless American fire.

Wayne Ritter a young employee of the Virginia Woolen Company suffered the end of his right forefinger torn off yesterday morning as he worked near Worting blackbirds east of town. The hammer of a gun caused the injury and the finger was amputated at the second joint after heavy bleeding. Ritter had tied a handkerchief around his finger before reaching town for aid.
Corporal R. A. Timberlake, son of Mr. Charles Timberlake of New York, arrived safely overseas per a telegram received locally. He serves in the One Hundred Seventh Infantry machine gun company and has numerous relatives in this city.
Members and visiting Odd Fellows meet at half past three Sunday afternoon. Secretary Ray Mattison returned to Camp Lee today after visiting his parents in Frederick County. Thomas W. Dean, the alleged wife killer, confessed in Winchester jail to Sheriff Pannett and others that he shot his wife after listening to her and Mrs. McKee talk for over an hour near the McKee home. He said jealousy drove the crime, occurred around 9:30 last Saturday, and he had stood outside the window spying on the couple. The shell was later recovered near the ridge from the McKee to the Butler home.
The Ghenandoah Valley Academy closes its term with commencement in Handley library lecture hall this evening at 8 30. Acting principal Major B H Pope will preside and deliver the address by Rev Dr J H Lacey. Diplomas are presented by Major B Me Rossel and medals by Major W W Glass. Despite wartime changes, the academy marks a successful session, with Pope and staff satisfied with the year and public attendance invited.

FOUND LIQUOR. At HITCHING YARD Reports reaching the police yesterday afternoon that man engaged in sewing liquor in a room at the county hitching yard caused an investigation to be made. Officer Neville discovered a suitcase containing a quart of liquor, a quart of brandy and two empty bottles. The suitcase and liquor were taken to police headquarters, where the liquor was placed in the stock of strong drink which Chief Doran has seized from bootleggers, whiskey tanners and drunks. The owner of the liquor disappeared and has not back for his liquor. He is known and will probably be arrested.

Zero arrests were made among the thousands who attended Confederate Memorial day services yesterday. The crowd included a few intoxicated individuals, but they remained within propriety and the crowd remained well ordered.
The British steamer Harpathian was torpedoed off the Virginia coast by a submarine described by the captain as 250 to 200 feet long with two 6 inch guns fore and aft. The vessel sank and did not reappear after the attack. Independent residents of Winchester announce candidacy for City Council in Ward One for the June election.

Thousands gathered in Winchester for the annual Confederate Memorial Day. Rev Mr Richardson delivered an eloquent address praising Southerners and their roles in history. Louisiana lot decorated by Capt James Bodley, who also raised the flag to full mast at noon. Memorial exercises led by General Turner Ashby Camp with Commander George W. Kurtz, veterans in motor cars, and prayers by Rev Dr De Lacy accompanied by Citizens’ music.
