Gas Shortage Blunts Virginia Toll Revenue Growth This Spring
Virginia toll facilities report weak May revenue gains or declines versus 1978 as fuel shortages deter out of state travel. The 17.5 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel shows May 1979 tolls down 6.5 percent from May 1978, while year to date up 4.5 percent. Turnpikes note an 8 percent drop in vacationer traffic but commuter and commercial travel rise. Expressway and Elizabeth River Tunnels show modest gains, with the tunnel posting its smallest increase since 1952.
