Wholesale prices rose 0.4 percent in May signaling the slowest increase in nine months. Beef prices at wholesale fell nearly 7 percent while nonfood consumer goods gained 1 percent. Gasoline and fuel oil continued to climb, fueling overall inflation concerns.
Eugene Casey of Clarke County, owner of over 10 percent of Financial General Bankshares, predicts Arabs will eventually own the company amid a hot bid. Casey cited rising takeover prospects and told the Star he believes the Arab group will win. The report notes FGB owns controlling interest in Shenandoah Valley National Bank in Winchester.
The Handley High School commencement observed 208 graduates in gray caps and gowns as the 56th ceremony opened. Salutatorian David Rice spoke on separation and change, while co valedictorians Mary Givens and others reflected on rites of passage and the world of innocence.
Randy Stickley, a Handley senior and star athlete, won the Winchester Evening Star Leadership Award a $1,000 prize recognizing excellence, character, leadership and duty. He tops his class academically with a 3.267 GPA and plans civil engineering at the University of Maryland.
A tractor trailer jumped a guardrail on the I 95 bridge over the Rap pahannock River near Fredericksburg and fell about 100 feet to the south bank. A man identified as Orbie Jack Hensley 40 of Mars Hill NC and a woman died. The truck struck Donald Fear 27 of Snell leading to minor injuries and the truck split in two after overturning. The cab and trailer dropped nose first and the cab was crushed under the trailer. The vehicle carried pharmaceutical supplies and cotton and medical debris littered the scene. This followed another fatal crash a mile away earlier in the week.
The FAA ordered a halt to all foreign-operated DC-10 flights and the U.S. fleet remains grounded for at least a week while investigators seek a potential engine mounting design defect. McDonnell Douglas criticized the move as extreme and said it may pursue court action to overturn the order.
Washington AP reports Allan Grant head of the American Farm Bureau Federation is pursuing a deal to import Libyan crude oil in exchange for wheat corn and farm equipment to ease diesel shortages for over 3 million farmers. Officials say military sales restrictions apply.
