More than 200 inmates died when a blaze swept through a Guatemala City asylum housing 1,400 inmates. Up to 300 feared dead as fire raged for seven hours. About 1,000 escaped or were moved to schools and government buildings.
A televised Democratic Convention moment showed Delegate Dick Rosenberger in a thoughtful pose, while Winchester notes report a cool break after heavy rain. Weather forecasts promise sun and lower humidity after highs near 80 and rainfall totaling 1.29 inches yesterday. Two planes crashed at opposite ends of the Philippine chain before dawn. Of 88 aboard, 87 survived after Northwest Orient Flight 58 ditched near Polillo Islands, while Philippine Airlines DC3 ditched near Dumaguete. one woman passenger was found dead. Survivors rescued by U.S. forces were brought to Manila and Sangley Point.
Senator John F Kennedy, the Democratic presidential nominee, said he hopes to choose a running mate within a couple of hours. He spoke at the Biltmore Hotel after a conference with Governor David L. Lawrence and Mayor Richard Daley about the No 2 spot on the ticket. Kennedy’s nomination was secured on the first ballot, but the party faces gaps as the campaign begins.
The convention nominated Kennedy, first Roman Catholic candidate since Al Smith, defeating Johnson 806 to 409 as Kennedy considers vice presidential options. Names floated include Symington and Jackson, with Johnson as a potential early pick. Robert Kennedy indicated Jackson as his favorite for the ticket.
