A 10 hour series of explosions at a Qui Nhon ammunition dump on the central coast of South Vietnam killed three South Korean workers and injured seven Americans and nine Koreans. The blast destroyed at least a third of the 15,000 tons stockpile and shattered windows miles away.
In Paris the Hanoi Saigon negotiators opened 1971 with hopes for progress yet repeated charges. Xuan Thuy and Pham Dang Lam urged movement while describing U.S. Vietnamization as intent to prolong the war. Bruce urged release of POWs and condemned the other side’s demands.
President Nixon, staying in San Clemente, is advised by his physician to get more sun and exercise to keep health. He and Pat plan a possible Palm Springs trip if weather improves. Earlier he signed a 550 million foreign aid bill, with 155 million for Cambodia, praising Congress for action and noting limits on U.S. troops or advisers in Cambodia.
Supervised sledding runs tonight from 6 to 9 30 in the southern Winchester Recreation Park led by Bob Fletcher of the Parks and Recreation Department. The area will be fed with sludge pots and will run daily as long as snow lasts. Macy’s Half Yearly Clearance at Worth’s stores opens tonight until 9. Bell’s Stores advertise winter apparel sales.
Enders Fire Department from Berryville responded to a 6:55 p.m. barn fire at Frankfort Farm owned by Arthur D. Weiss about four miles east of Berryville. The blaze, of undetermined origin, destroyed the barn a riding horse, a tractor, and a large quantity of hay and grain, but two adjoining small buildings were saved.
Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird said the United States could boost military aid to Thailand as the Nixon Doctrine expands in Asia. He noted Thailand will need more assistance over the next decade as U.S. forces are reduced and allies shoulder more defense burdens. Laird arrived in Bangkok for a 23 hour visit en route from Paris to South Vietnam and did not confirm any Cambodia meeting.
Cold grips the nation from the Southwest to the Great Lakes with subzero readings. Albuquerque schools close for a third day as gas shortages prompt propane trucking and thermostat cuts, while postal service and window service at the main post office are reduced to conserve heat. Salt Lake City pipes burst flooding tunnels and cutting heat and power. Magma Copper lays off workers as gas shortages hit Arizona mines. Snow removal slows Nebraska and Iowa highways, and cattlemen work to corral blizzard driven cattle to prevent rustling.
United Nations envoy Gunnar V. Jarring travels to Jerusalem to push start of indirect Arab Israeli peace talks with Israel Egypt and Jordan. Israeli opposition to talks at U N headquarters prompts bid to meet Abba Eban and reset discussions within days. Western diplomats note varied roles for the Big Four as US Soviet Britain and France weigh involvement. Nixon administration urges concessions to reach a settlement.
Israel says Egyptian warplanes of Sukhoi bombers flew over Israeli-held Sinai positions around midday Wednesday within the ten kilometer zone and again east of Qantara about 30 miles south of Port Said.
Rosenberger of Winchester was elected president of the Frederick Winchester Clarke Young Democratic Club at its first annual meeting. Other officers named were Edmund Osterman of Frederick County vice president, Phyllis Reid of Winchester secretary, Gartha Coffey of Middletown treasurer, and Betty White of Winchester chairwoman of the Membership Committee.
The Virginia House approved a provisional resolution allowing 52 code bills already introduced to be referred to committee and printed despite Senate inaction on bill introduction procedures. The Senate may insist on changes limiting side issues and setting a windup target, with a conference between rules committees expected to resolve differences.
