A massive sleet snow storm from the Oklahoma Texas border to New England disrupts transport and power. The New York Stock Exchange suspends trading tomorrow. Rail lines, airlines and utilities face widespread outages as forecasters warn of more snow and ice.

A young married couple identified as Mr and Mrs E C Cook abandoned their two small children in a desolate swamp in Georgia. The sheriff said the seven month old daughter was found dead and the three year old son was near death in the bushes. The parents were being sought by police and held in jail here.
Rain through the first day of the New Year totaled 1.33 inches, greatly exceeding December totals. A drop in temperature turned drizzle to snow before noon, but flakes melted on streets and did not disrupt traffic. Some sidewalks were hazardous. Crops progress fair, wheat growth down from last year but not killed by cold. Norther Virginia Power Co. reported no sleet issues. roads cleared in northern county. Freight trucks routed around icy stretches. some bus routes reported passable roads with snow nearby.
A. W. Weddell former ambassador to Spain and Argentina and his wife die in a New Year’s Day collision near Otterville Missouri. About 12 others injured including Frank M. Ryan and family. The wreck halted a Missouri Pacific train in a heavy snow storm.
Senator Elmer Thomas of Oklahoma voiced doubt that Americans are ready for Truman inflation controls. He argued that Oklahomans would endure price increases over price controls and that prices must rise to sustain the economy, opposing wage-price restraints and rationing.
Andrew Bell received a certificate of merit and life membership for 25 years as secretary treasurer of the Winchester Kiwanis Club. The award, signed by President W. R. Strader, cited faithful service and club welfare contributions. George Good succeeds Bell as secretary.
Winchester residents reported a noisy New Year period with many fireworks complaints and giant firecrackers wrecking property. Police Chief J Thomas Boyd noted numerous arrests over the holiday, including Ira Fenton Sapp who forfeited bond after failing to appear on drunken and destructive charges.
The first baby of 1948 at Winchester Memorial Hospital was a boy to Mr and Mrs Boyd Davis of Wardensville born at 2 59 am. The mother Mrs Armeda Kerns and baby are reported well by Dr C L Riley. A second 1948 baby arrived at 9 10 am to Mr and Mrs Robert Campbell of 122 W Cork St. The Campbells’ infant, a boy, is their first child. the father is a WWII veteran at Lamp Motor Co. Last year the first 1947 baby also came to an out of town couple.
The Baltimore News-Post and Baltimore Sunpapers each announced increases in home delivery costs. The News-Post will raise the weekly carrier price from 20 to 25 cents starting January 5.
Five day outlook notes colder wind Saturday with low temperatures. Sunday through Tuesday show warming trend with minimal precipitation expected. A chance of light rain or mixed precipitation appears in the period.
Rep. Leo Allen estimates House Speaker Joseph W. Martin has a one in five chance to win the Republican nomination at Philadelphia. Allen compares Dewey Taft 1940 dynamics and says Martin could be the logical compromise. He favors Harold E. Stassen as a potential vice presidential pick and notes Martin plans a Midwestern speaking tour.

Sixteen year old Tommy Lee Phillips, held on murder charges in Forsyth County, reportedly confessed to shooting his father T. E. Phillips and mother after a quarrel over $232 stolen from the wallet. He and his 16 year old girlfriend Bessie Jenkins were arrested in York South Carolina while seeking marriage. The sheriff said the boy signed a statement admitting shooting his mother who went to the telephone for aid after his father was wounded.
Two P-80 jet fighters set high speed marks over Japan aided by strong upper level tail winds. William K. Thomas flew 350 miles from Hiroshima to Tokyo in 27 minutes averaging 777.7 mph, while John B. Chickering covered 175 miles from Misawa to Sendai in 13 minutes 27 seconds for 780 mph. Officials noted unusual winds at altitude this season.
Paris January 2 France signed a treaty with the United States granting 522 million dollars in winter aid to France Italy and Austria. Ambassador Jefferson Caffery and French Foreign Minister Georges Bidault signed in the foreign ministry in a public ceremony. France may receive up to 328 million from the allotment to tide over until the Marshall plan for European recovery takes effect.
A 76 year old man confessed in a signed statement to fatally shooting Robert Hutchins 20 and wounding his wife Shirley 20 near Denver. Their four year old son Larry survived and described the attack, saying the man shot daddy and later the mother, while the driver sped away. The child recalled the assailant demanded the father turn and claimed the gun belonged to the victim.
Coast Guardsmen rescued 21 men from a fishing steamer driven aground near Ocracoke island after heavy seas. The incident occurred shortly before midnight with responders pulling survivors from the beach.
Senator Sparkman of Alabama says Congress is unlikely to tighten rent controls and expects extension of the current law beyond February 29. President Truman urged stronger controls as part of his anti inflation program, while hearings on extension are expected after January 6.
Washington reports the FBI is examining grain trading tied to Brig. Gen. Wallace H. Graham personal physician to President Truman. Senator Knowland released a letter from Bache and Co stating Graham's account was provided to the government. Graham denies knowledge of specific trades and asserts he gave brokers full authority.
Dr Walter 8 Hough a logistic at Winchester Laboratory in ill health after a heart attack while tending a convention in Chicago. Dr A B Groves pathologist at the same lab arrived home unaware of Hough’s condition. The second such attack is reported and doctors expect his return to Winchester next week.
