Red forces close on Koenigsberg and Elbing as Zhukov concentrates near Berlin. Reports say Soviet moisels threaten Silesia and Liegnitz while German claims speak of a major western front offensive and Berlin fog cloaks troop concentrations near Aachen.
Washington dispatch reports American officials hope the big three can craft a settlement formula for the Polish dispute. The issue tests Allied cooperation and may require concessions by Russia and commitments from the United States, with pressure from Britain. Roosevelt reportedly aims for broader accords at the Black Sea conference to satisfy Russians and Polish groups.
Twenty First Bomber Command reports a powerful B 29 force possibly the largest ever to strike Japan bombing Tokyo in rare good weather. About 90 bombers in five waves attacked around 2 30 p m Japanese time, causing damage to ground installations while pilots report excellent results.

Clarke county school officials urge Governor Darden to enact a retail sales tax to fund public schools. The resolution argues the tax is the only feasible revenue source to raise school standards and asks that most funds go to counties for teacher salaries, improvements, and capital outlays.
The Tokyo newspaper Yomiuri Hachi Shinbun reflected concern that Russia could enter the war against Japan after the Staling Churchill Roosevelt conference. A Tokyo radio editorial warned Japan to be prepared for any situation that may arise.

Washington February 10 The debate over extending the Office of Price Administration continues as Senator Butler says extension legislation will meet little opposition. OPA authority expires June 30 and Chairman Wagner will propose extending it to December 31 1946. Senate hearings begin February 26 with Butler seeking an advance meat price announcement requirement to aid planners for cattle feeders and producers. He warns sudden price changes cause distress and calls for a thorough review of enforcement performance.
The Japanese cabinet was reshuffled amid ongoing criticism of the war effort. Prime Minister Koiso remains in charge as critics gain no decisive victory. FCC-recorded Tokyo remarks tie the changes to pressuring war reverses and supply line disruptions from the Philippines and Dutch Indies.
Mr and Mrs Charles E Andrick of Middletown report a letter from their son Pvt Harry G Andrick dated November 18. He was reported missing in Holland on October 29. The letter states he is a German prisoner in his own handwriting.
Mrs. Foster Reeves learns from the War Department that her husband Pfc Foster Reeves was killed in action in the Pacific Area on January 18 1945. He served as an expert rifleman and resided with his parents near Reliance Warren County.
Manila reports describe mined streets and mortars firing from upper floors as American troops push toward the Pasig River dock area. General MacArthur calls the fighting the fiercest yet, with heavy resistance in Intramuros and counterattacks repulsed near Tagaytay on Luzon.
The government rests its case against two accused Nazi agents, William C. Colepaugh and Erich Gimpel. A defense motion to clear Colepaugh of wartime lurking behind U S defenses under an assumed name was denied. Gimpel is described as an important Berlin operative with a private office in security army headquarters and a private secretary.
Pfc George W Owens 24 of Berryville dies at Bruns Army General Hospital Santa Fe eight months after being wounded in France. He entered service in 1942 trained at Camp Wheeler Ga and served in North Africa Italy England before D Day. Survived by his parents and several siblings with funeral plans pending arrival of the body from the West.
At the World Trade Union Conference in London CIO secretary treasurer J B Carey urged internationalizing parts of Germany industry and using German labor to rebuild war wrecked Europe. He said the CIO backs measures to eradicate Nazism and fascism and agrees with Sir Walter Citrine's peace proposals including an international TVA in the Rhine and Danube valleys.
Canadian First Army troops pushed through the Siegfried line toward Kleve as German forces flooded the Roer and North Rhine industrial region threats. U S Ninth Army faced German resistance northwest of Kleve while soils along the Roer rose with water from the Schwammenauel dam as dramatic river-control measures were exercised. Further south American units pressed near the Siegfried line prize of Pruem with heavy German counterattacks.
Rome reports Allied counterattacks repulsed in the Serchio Valley and coastal Italian areas. The Fifth Army advanced, halting Nazis at Strettoia near Serchio and near Lucca. Allied patrols noted increased enemy opposition along the coast. Front gun positions and mortars clashed as warming weather turned snow to mud.
