Allied offensives on the Western Front push toward the Ruhr as Canadian First Army advances beyond two miles into northwest Germany with six towns captured near Kleve and Leuth. American Third Army nears Pruem. French First Army breaches defenses south of Strasbourg. In the east, Zhukov's forces reach near Stettin with another drive toward Breslau.
Governor Thomas Dewey told a Washington audience that Roosevelt has bipartisan support in seeking postwar international aims with Churchill and Stalin, while warning against “false liberalism” at home. Some Republican senators praised the international stance, others criticized the address as too highbrow and questioned the domestic emphasis. Dewey pressed for immediate American participation in shaping Europe’s new map and endorsed Dumbarton Oaks plans for a lasting organization.
Chicago report details a proposed central intelligence service to coordinate postwar intelligence, supersede existing federal agencies, and report directly to the President. London reports a German announcement that Mayor Schroeter of Koenigsberg was hanged for abandoning his town without evacuation orders. This marks the third eastern front civilian execution, following actions against officials in Breslau and Bydgoszcz, as Berlin and Paris broadcasts note intensified resistance and displacement amid Allied bombing and civilian upheaval.
American infantry on amphibious tanks pushed toward Manila docks as Japanese demolition charges raged in intramuros. Fires burned freely amid the bombardment while U S forces from the 37th Infantry Division crossed the Pasig to clear south Manila. An NBC report quoted by George Thomas Forster said progress continued with Maj. Gen. Swing’s 11th Airborne aiding the advance around Nichols Field.

London reports say German authorities halted evacuations of foreign workers in the east to avoid unrest as millions of enslaved laborers remain in the Reich. Moscow cites food shortages and refugee bans while Berlin builds defense zones east of the city.
The Winchester-Frederick county Chapter of the American Red Cross completed a three day blood donor clinic with 480 pints collected from February 7 to 9. About 700 volunteers supported the effort, Shenandoah County sending 168 volunteers. Jessie Smoot led Shenandoah County's donors, with praise for volunteers, industries, and Red Cross personnel. Music criticism and radio efforts were acknowledged, and the drive aims to sustain plasma and whole blood for war fronts worldwide.

Irvine Cather announces Frederick County Annual Poultry Institute to be held Friday February 16 at the County Court House in Winchester. The event runs 10:00 to 3:30 with two sections on production and marketing chaired by local agricultural leaders and featuring speakers from Virginia and West Virginia including S M Cox J B Smith M F E Coe and Howard Ziegler among others.
A 1936 Chevrolet Tudor sedan owned by William E. Riley of Baltimore was stolen from Baltimore and found abandoned locally. An observer said two youths left it overnight. the switch was torn and the car wired over. Riley’s gas ration book was inside. Maryland identified the car as stolen. The case was turned over to Hartzell local FBI agent.
Reported heavy artillery and infantry actions along a wide front from Stettin toward Breslau and the Baltic. German defenses claim encirclements broke while Soviet forces probe toward Stettin Stargard and Danzig, threatening 13 miles from the Baltic and potentially trapping German divisions in Pomerania.
