The Mundt proposal to supply a 2 billion credit to Britain and France failed 206 to 145 on the House floor. Rep. Johnson argued grants of credits would only delay the United States’ response during the crisis.
Charles A. Lindbergh testified that aiding Britain and other nations would encourage war and prolong bloodshed in Europe without materially affecting the war. He spoke during a congressional hearing while opposing the aid bill under questioning by a Democrat from Texas.
A Winchester figure laments a low ebb in state game conditions and urges sportsmen to join the state commission and groups in restoring hunting and propagation efforts. He notes Hardy county duck hunters planting wild rice to improve the sport and calls for united efforts across counties.

New York report details a Brooklyn couple, Jackie Steels and Kenneth, nightly cabaret performers, leaving their infant Kenneth Jr. with their guard dog Daisy Mae. The dog was found near the crib where the 18 month old boy died from strangulation in his basement apartment.
Lt Col Griffin reports Captain Graham Dougherty is restored to active command at Headquarters of Adjutant General Waller in Richmond effective February 4 after a successful appeal following a temporary disqualification for physical reasons. Berryville unit roster lists Dougherty among officers with Privates including Clem Carey Crosby Ross Ross Russell Shackleford Shenk Simpson Vorous Walls Williams.
American defendants charged in a federal indictment with conspiring to control magnesium production used in airplane manufacture pled innocent today before Federal Judge Alfred C. Coxe in New York.
DETROIT February 6. The United Automobile Workers CIO threatens a strike at Ford Motor three plants unless rapid progress is made. UAW CIO demands include immediate bargaining at River Rouge and Highland Park, a 10 cent hourly wage raise, and seniority principles. Ford rejects negotiations while a NLRB election for Lincoln is petitioned. R J Thomas and Michael F Widman Jr speak of sincere talks to avoid a strike.
Approximately 100 guests are expected for the Winchester Frederick Chapter Red Cross annual dinner at 7 p m at the George Washington Hotel. Rev Herman J Womeldorf will preside likely marking his last meeting before moving to Holmes Presbyterian Church Norfolk Presbytery. W W Glass will deliver the principal address and Edythe Ballard will present the annual report. Officers for the year will be elected.
John G. Winant former New Hampshire governor and Republican aligned with the New Deal was nominated by President Roosevelt to be ambassador to Great Britain succeeding Joseph P Kennedy. The slate included several other diplomatic appointments with transfers between posts and new ministerial roles.
Two army pursuit planes collided mid air near Farmdale New York. First Lieutenant John H Eakin was killed when his plane crashed near a lumber yard. Second Lieutenant Joseph Laycock bailed out and broke an ankle. The crash followed another air base incident earlier in the week.
Lieutenant Charles R. Douglas formerly of Winchester in charge of Valley Airways Inc is on leave from Vultee California where he tests government aircraft He plans to return to Winchester tomorrow for three days He will stay with Mr and Mrs George Scheder and an open house will be held Saturday night to greet him
Secretary Knox’s plane and President Roosevelt’s physician joined efforts to save the sight of Seaman Leonard H. Yates aboard the carrier Wasp after a propeller inflicted a skull fracture and facial injuries. Blood transfusions and medical care in Miami were followed by a return to Washington for treatment. Yates hopes to resume active duty soon.

A Trans-Canada Airlines plane with Pi Nine passengers and three crew members was found wrecked near Armstrong 391 miles east of Winnipeg. The crash killed all aboard and the cause was not disclosed. The flight had set out earlier in light snow amid generally good conditions. Pilot W. E. Twiss had indicated an approach for landing before contact was lost.
Dr. Edgar Gammon announced the appointment of M Henry Bittinger 37 as professor and head of history at Hampden-Sydney College beginning next fall. A Hampden-Sydney alumnus, he has led the history department at Blake School in Minneapolis for ten years and holds an MA from the University of Virginia.

Willkie plans to hunt lions in the African jungle upon arrival in Bolama and on the southern air route to New York. He leaves Lisbon and will arrive in New York around Saturday or Sunday, after touring Britain. Miss Mary Jane Mc Cone, superintendent of Winchester Memorial Hospital, calls for cooperation from all nurses in Winchester and Frederick Clarke Page Warren and Rappahannock counties to join a nationwide survey of available graduate nurses. A student crowd in Rome shouted Down With Democracy as they moved toward the U S embassy but were turned aside down a side street and did not reach the embassy. The incident involved Italian and German flag bearing students and occurred this afternoon.
Washington reports authoritatively that the United States and Mexico plan a broad good neighbor accord to settle major economic questions. The plan, drafted by Under Secretary Welles and Mexican Ambassador Nejera, aims for a lump settlement of disputes including oil expropriation and other controversial claims valued in the tens of millions to hundreds of millions. In West Pittston Pennsylvania on February 6 a surface settlement disrupted a three block area, throwing at least 20 families from beds. Cracks up to 20 inches opened in streets as gas and water mains broke and residents were evacuated until gas could be shut off. A large store window was shattered.
