Christmas Eve brings quiet scenes with light snow and clear roads except Romney West Virginia reports eight inches of snow. Banks and state agencies close for a four day holiday. federal employees also on four day break. Churches schedule 7 p.m. services and Santa Claus seen at a local bank.
The Star staff, including Doug O Connell Russ Potts Mary Helen Massie Audrey Coleman and Pat Robinson, earned seven Virginia Press Association honors. O Connell and Potts won first places with stories on Hospital Ward 2 Miles High and Handley James Wood football. Massie shared in a second place combo story. Coleman received honorable mention for movie headlines commentary.
Qwik Shop Market at 2121 Papermill Road announces Christmas Eve hours until 10 p.m. The store is closed on Christmas day and offers a range of gifts fruits candy oysters and country ham.
The Star will not publish tomorrow due to Christmas Day observance as a national holiday.
The 1969 session of the 91st Congress ends after a long, mostly unproductive year. Democrats pushed major measures including a tax and Social Security bill and a $4.8 billion housing bill. Burger confirmed as Chief Justice. Haynsworth nomination rejected. Nixon vows new picks in 1970, veto threats surface, and defense spending debates extend into next year.
Allied forces initiated a 24 hour Christmas truce as a three day Viet Cong cease-fire opened. South Vietnamese forces reported the start of the armistice and prepared for the holiday pause in hostilities.
A. Lee Coble 78 of 7 N Washington St a former Winchester City Council member died today. Born December 6 1891 in Winchester he was a World War I veteran and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2123. He served 20 years on the council and is survived by his widow three children and five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending at Jones Funeral Home with service at Christ Episcopal Church.
Local shops and service centers announce Christmas and holiday hours. Businesses including Corner Market, Miller's Hardware, Corner Stationery, Shenandoah Gas Co, The Zenith Center, Town House Restaurant, Schewell Furniture, and multiple Esso stations list closures or special openings over December 25 26 27 with reopen dates and emergency contacts.
