Winchester Man Survives When Truck Plunges Into Frozen River
Paul Horst of 310 Liberty Ave a Pony Express helper in Hagerstown survived a truck crash near Gasaway West Virginia when a tractor trailer plunged into the Elk River. The driver Emory R Barnhouse of Emmitsburg Md was presumed dead. Horst suffered shock and bruises but was not in serious condition and was taken to J C Bakers home in Gassaway. Bulldozers and officers were at the scene as the wreck remained submerged six hours after impact.

Los Angeles Fire Chief Ousted Over Integration Orders

Young killer dies after posse gunfight in Pennsylvania
In Vandergrift, John Fallone, 17, who killed three and wounded two, died six hours after a 16 hour chase ended in a gunfight with a posse. Gladys Smail, 15, in critical condition from chest wounds, and her parents were among victims. Officer Gus Zanos was wounded but survived. Police report about 100 shots fired as the posse closed in.

Truck overturn spills coal along Route 50 near Winchester
A 1951 Ford truck left U S Route 50 three miles west of Winchester at 1 25 p m yesterday skidded rolled over and knocked down an electric pole before resting against a tree. Driver Glenn F Lofton 22 of Stephenson suffered a sprained wrist facial lacerations and a knee cut and was treated then released. Thirteen tons of coal valued at 11 per ton spilled along the highway. Owner H Hershel Omps of Stephenson owned the truck. Damage was about 1000 to the truck and 50 to the pole. State Trooper J W Detrick investigated.
