Straw Burns At The Fair Grounds
At about 9 30 this morning a straw stack at the Winchester Fair Grounds caught fire from an unknown source. The blaze threatened the Walter L Main Circus building where lions tigers leopards dogs and other animals were housed in winter quarters. A strong south wind and fire department efforts halted the flames with only small property damage. All fire companies answered the alarm.

Robert W. Smith world veteran and son of County Treasurer Robert S. Smith died at the Naval Base Hospital in Washington at 9:15 AM. Cause of death was complications from gas exposure during World War I with the American Expeditionary Forces. He was 34. Survived by wife Irene, two children Robert W. Smith Jr and infant Jeanne, his father, and two sisters Blair Hahn of Spartanburg South Carolina and M Griffin of Winchester. He served with Company I, 106th Infantry Virginia National Guard, on the Mexican border and in France before discharge in 1918.
