Virginia moves to tabulate auto owners for personal property tax in 1927. Motor Vehicle Commissioner James M Hayes orders local agencies to report owner and car make for those without tags. Estimated local revenue from the tax ranges 300000 to 400000 dollars with rates 1.50 to 2 per one hundred assessed value. Tags must be obtained before January 1 with no grace period.
Canton Ohio December 7 The state seeks jurors favoring the death penalty for Patrick Eugene McDermott in the Don R Melett slaying Canton publisher. A tentative panel of 12 emerged with nine men and three women seated at noon and 15 veniremen excused as they declared guilt. Two were excluded for opposition to capital punishment.
The next cripple clinic for Winchester and Frederick County residents will be held Saturday December 11 from 9 30 a m to 4 p m at the District Nurse Association office in the Chamber of Commerce building. Dr Allan Voshell of the University of Virginia will supervise with Kiwanis Rotary and the State Bureau of Rehabilitation. Ollie Rose fined fifty dollars and thirty days, John Blaisdell six months on the roads and fifty dollars, Gore and another man one year added to existing sentences, Robert Supinger fifty dollar fine and thirty days, Alonzo Puffinberger life imprisonment. Several cases scheduled for trial including George Bowers and Walter Hoover. Gold Parson denied a new trial and awaits Supreme Court appeal.
John M. Massie was re-elected as superintendent of the Parish Farm of Winchester and Frederick counties by the county supervisors at their meeting yesterday. The salary remains unchanged as no increase accompanies the election. Four other applicants competed for the post: W. R. Orndorff, R. W. Bayliss, Fred Newlin, and A. W. Foreman.
Tom Morn a Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive engineer operating a passenger train near Winchester was involved in a hunting trip when a firearm discharged while reloading in sleep quarters. The shot struck his closest friend outside the house, severed an artery, and the man bled to death before aid arrived.

Police and squads from west side suburbs attacked a freight car stronghold of foreign workers in a Proviso township yard after a preliminary skirmish left two dead including a policeman. About 33 men and one woman were captured in the raid conducted with tear gas and firearms.

Edward L. Doheny, aged 70, sick with an infected arm, prompted a court adjournment in the conspiracy trial with Albert B. Fall over leasing Elk Hills reserve. A second lancing operation was done, and the judge moved the trial to a date when Doheny can return to court.
Jack Dempsey announces he will begin training next week in Los Angeles for a possible return bout with Gene Tunney. He says he could beat Tunney if he can comeback, otherwise he wants no more fights. He denies poisoning or fixing rumors and praises Tunney as a stiff puncher.

Fourteen year old Reuben Tidler of Kernstown was killed when a sled he rode crashed onto the Valley Pike near Kernstown while coasting after a midday school recess. The truck to which the sled pinned him passed over his leg and head, leading to fatal skull injuries. He died at Winchester Memorial Hospital after nonrecovery. Authorities notified, driver claimed no sight of the child.
