Donner Party German Group Aboard Wagon Train Leads to Calamity
An 1846 Donner Party account traces a German speaking group, including the Kesebergs and Spitzer, joining in Sangamon County and leaving Independence with nearly 300 wagons. The party faces early misfortune, brutal Sierra snow, loss of Wolfinger and Hardcoop, and doom by winter as diary entries record depths up to eight feet and a fatal crossing of Spitzer in February 1847.
