Virginia growers were urged to keep all number two apples out of barrels at a Saturday meeting in Governor Byrd's orchard. Speakers pressed the statewide campaign to improve fruit quality and market standards.
Senator Carter Glass and horticultural experts address 700 Virginia producers at Governor Byrd's Montros t orchard in Clarke county. Speakers advocate a careful plan to remove defective apples, improve tree spacing, thinning, spraying and pollination to enlarge fruit size and market appeal. Continued on Page 3.
Dozens of horses entered in harness and running races for the fifty seventh Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Society fair begin events at Winchester fair grounds tomorrow. Har ness heats follow a three heat plan with ten percent of purses set aside for two heat winners. Entries for running races remain open with purses of three hundred dollars.
Season tickets for the Winchester Fair grant four days and nights of admission at a price of two dollars. Tickets are available at People's Drug Store and Red Apple Restaurant.

Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church will hold old home-coming services on Sunday September 12 with Rev Dr J S Clair Neal of Baltimore as preacher. Neal began his ministry at the Market Street church about 55 years ago and will return next month for the mother congregation when old home day is observed. Also featured is the release of John I Sloat’s history of Methodism in Winchester focusing on Market Street Church based on extensive data from old records.
Miss Kemp announces the opening of a private school on Monday September 13 at 14 W Water Street. The facility will serve students from 1 to 11 with classes scheduled for the new term.

City work on the Town Run drainage progresses with a concrete central channel and limestone walls replacing dilapidated bed and crumbling stone. Underground construction uses electric lamps for visibility as arches under South Cameron street are assessed for safety and potential reconstruction. City Manager L R Dettra oversees the project with annual appropriations aiming to finish within a year to reduce storm water flooding on Boscawen street.
Elks who are Lions are urged to attend a luncheon at noon on Tuesday August 31 at the Geo Washington Hotel. The notice requests all Lions to attend.
Philander C Knox, former senator and diplomat, was wounded by a broken glass during a quarrel with wife Jose phine Poole Knox at their Washington DC home. He was treated at Casualty Hospital for a wrist cut and blood loss and rests comfortably. Police report lists the incident as domestic dispute with Mrs Knox denying intent.
The funeral for Rudolph Valentino drew thousands along Broadway from a church at Broadway and Sixty-sixth to St. Malachy’s in West Forty-ninth. Pola Negri and Jean Acker led the cortege, with Mary Pickford among the mourners, as Chopin’s Marche Funebre accompanied the pallbearers and a final burial decision awaited Valentino’s brother Albert.

A. F. Murphy of Nottoway county Virginia paid a $19.75 fine including costs in Frederick county magistrate court for speeding. Magnus Leach of Warren county Virginia had his buggy wrecked on Main Street Stephens City when struck by Murphy's car. Leach was injured and Murphy, business manager of Burkeville Sanitorium, settled privately for damage. Leach received about $87.
Henry Kerns proprietor of a North Loudoun street pool room waived examination in the county magistrate court before Justice Tavenner on two charges driving under the influence and failing to stop after an accident. The Marpole car, carrying Mr. Marpole his wife and son, was on the Valley pike near Vaucluse when hit. Kerns was arrested on the pike and charged by Motor Vehicle Inspector H. E. Shull. arraigned, he declined to speak and is held in 500 bail for the October circuit court grand jury.
A short circuit in the wiring started a fire in a concession truck at the fairgrounds yesterday. Peter Smith of Schnectady New York suffered burns to his right arm and left hand while trying to fight the blaze. He was treated at Memorial Hospital by Dr. Hugh Clark. The engine was destroyed and the fire put out with chemicals.
