Winchester Fair Opens Amid Rain Fears and Mardi Gras Lights
Rain threatened the Winchester Fair but cleared by 10 am, bringing sun and warm weather. About 7 000 people gathered at noon despite clouds. Organizers hoped for rain to trigger $4 000 insurance, which would cover hours noon to six if rainfall reached a tenth of an inch. Confederate veterans and delegates to the Grand Camp in session in this city denounced jitney drivers who tried to charge fifty cents to return from the Fairgrounds. Officials could not identify the guilty men. The city regulates jitney rates at 25 cents to the Fair grounds. Most jitney operators reportedly transport Confederate veterans free of charge.

John Fishback aged about 75 from Dunkirk Indiana died at the Fairfax Hotel on South Market street about 6 this morning due to general debility while visiting with his wife and several sons and relatives. Arrangements were made to return the body to Dunkirk for interment.
