A noon gathering on the grounds drew thousands as hundreds more continued to arrive. Organizers expect a large turnout with speeches and displays shaping the event. Officials urged orderly conduct and thanked participants for their enthusiasm.
Managements supreme effort to amuse patrons leads to running events replacing harness races as an auto polo incident halts a race. Despite the accident no disorder occurs among the thousands present. Fair fares are favorable and financially strong, with great automobile races scheduled as tomorrow's feature.
Noon estimates put ten thousand on the Winchester Fair grounds with four o clock projections reaching fourteen to sixteen thousand attendees. The event draws Old residents and visitors from Shenandoah and Cumberland valleys while 300 Confederate Veterans delegates add to the throng. Railways run full and the in field brims with autos as crowds pour in. continued on page 8.
Washington officials reported that mine union officials and operators in Philadelphia accepted the anthracite strike settlement proposal from Friday night talks. Advices from official circles in the capital indicated hope that operators would also approve the plan by day’s end, though details remained undisclosed.
Governor E. Lee Trinkle arrived in Winchester to attend the Winchester Fair and was hosted by Senator and Mrs. Harry F. Byrd at their Berryville home. He joined a Rotary Club luncheon, declined another invitation, then attended a dinner at the Baker residence before continuing his stay to meet local friends. He plans to depart the area tomorrow morning.

The canning plant at Winchester Virginia will begin operation within ten days.
The Clarke county Board of Supervisors refuse to transfer the Shenandoah river bridge and 25 miles of roads to the state for maintenance and reconstruction. The move blocks plans for the Lee-Jackson highway to Washington as federal funds require toll-free routes. County must rebuild the bridge and cover accident liabilities if the transfer fails. Local tolls barely cover upkeep while most residents favor state ownership and tollgate abolition, with negotiations set for Richmond.
Empire Management brings the same company and production seen at Knickerbocker Theatre to New York on Wednesday September 6. Tickets are 2.50 orchestra, 1.00 to 2.00 balcony, 0.75 gallery, all seats good and prices plus tax.

Robert Y. Conrad Post No. 21 of Winchester dominates the Virginia American Legion scene with 225 members and ownership of its building. At the Charlottesville convention, Major R T Barton and four delegates from the post participated, casting five votes. Clifford D Grim and others were elected to state committees. Mrs W A Baker became second vice president of the state auxiliary.
A large number of local businesses plan to close next Monday for Labor Day and several plants may follow. In keeping with longstanding practice, The Star will not publish an edition on Labor Day.
Funeral services for William M. The Winchester Public Schools announce the 1922-23 opening date and registration for new Winchester residents. New pupils in grades 1-6 register September 4 to 6 at the John Kerr Building and grades 7-12 at Equity Grounds. County pupils register September 16. Existing students need not register. registration deadline is September 8.
A long account outlines the career of Grand Commander Colvin born in Campbell county Virginia who enlisted in 1862 and served in the Eleventh Virginia Infantry. He later worked for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad becoming a locomotive engineer on the Shenandoah Valley line and is highly regarded in Harrisonburg for his southern courtesy and chivalry.
The first prize for the fattest baby at the Winchester fair baby show went to William Nelson Buhl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Buhl of 1307 South Main Street. The winner’s name was accidentally omitted in a prior Star account.
