Young Lowery Fells to Belt Accident at Mill
Robert Lee Lowery, 15, a youth worker at Old Dominion Paper Company mill, was killed when a belt tore him from overhead shafting. He suffered severed arms and broken legs, dying an hour later at Memorial Hospital after assist from Buck Chapman and Cecil Loy. The accident, witnessed by about a dozen youths, occurred during cellar cleanup around 4 pm.

Patton Brothers Involved In Lexington Car Crash
T B Pattons brother McClung Patton former Lexington Virginia postmaster and E L Conner former assistant postmaster were struck by an automobile on Lexington Main Street. They were dragged and severely injured and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Patton suffered serious facial and head wounds with facial cuts and arm injuries.

Passengers report an attack on a French liner one day out from France. The vessel used a new smoke producing apparatus to render herself invisible, enabling gun crews to fire on the submarine. This was the first test of the device.

John Kerr Schools Delay Opening to September 17
