Mrs Sherrard known as Miss Shazie lived quietly in Winchester. She welcomed visitors at intervals for many years and, with rare talent for friendship, inspired wide sadness at her death. Her keen attention and loyalty defended others, while she sought the virtues in people and idealized them after first noticing their good traits.
Mrs Rivers Johnson became violently unstable on North Brandoen Street and attacked her husband, Drackemith. After a prolonged nightsearch by police, she was found by Officer Neville and returned home. Later authorities ruled her to be unbalanced and she was committed for treatment at a local institution.
Long Island dispatch reports speculation on whether the Second Virginia Regiment will train at Camp McClellan Alabama or be sent elsewhere. Some Virginians already at Mineola say many remain unsure of the regiment’s destination as rumors persist about early service with the Rainbow Division.
The district exemption board for Winchester and Frederick county certified 17 petitions for service in the new army and granted four discharges. Names include Roy Lee Owens Walter Vance William Otto Wilson Earl Clowser Linden Affleck Singhass and others. Continued on page five.
Capt James W Bodiley superintendent at Winchester National Cemetery reports his grandson Dr James W Bodley has been named first lieutenant in the United States Army Medical Corps with orders to be ready for duty. Bodley son of Charles Bodley of Philadelphia and trained at German Hospital and University of Pennsylvania born in Virginia.

Early today a complete outfit was found behind the Virginia Woolen Mill sparking speculation about why the clothing was abandoned. Nearby residents saw a woman on a rock near the scene at daylight but police concluded the garments did not belong to a missing woman and the bundle was taken to headquarters.

Washington reports the revenue bill reshaped by the Senate Finances Committee adds about 500 million dollars to war profits levies, lifting total war profit taxes past 1 billion. The panel backs a 60 percent levy on profits over 300 percent, targeting war profits while leaving one rate unchanged and redefining levy bases to ease firms with normal prewar profits and hit those with super normal profits.
A large crowd attended the funeral of Robert Lee Lowery at Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church. He died after a work accident at the Ola Dominion Paper Company plant. Rev. Dr. George S. William Benson, colored, was found asleep in a Camden Parkside yard with a blinking rooster perched on his chest. He and the chicken were jailed pending investigation. Benson claimed the bird wandered in after he stopped at a saloon for drinks.
