The Navy asked Congress for 18 935 000 for improvements at 11 U S shipyards for the year ending next June 30. Testimony to a House subcommittee disclosed the request with Norfolk Virginia receiving 5 382 000 to deepen a dry dock.
A 17 year old S. Cameron St. youth was fined 14.50 in Municipal Court for reckless driving. Judge Rice imposed the penalty. State law forbids naming minors. William W. Brendle, 29, of 11 E Cecil St., was convicted of misconduct and assault and battery. Judge Rice fined him 60 on charges brought by two policemen and Kenneth Stottlemyer.
About 170 demonstrators mostly teenagers staged a lay in at five East St. Louis banks protesting discriminatory hiring. 33 adults were booked for unlawful assembly and the rest were turned over to juvenile authorities after being transported to police headquarters.
