July 4th Fireworks Fine for Winchester Pair

John Steward Reuben, 20, and Richard Terry LaFollette, 18, were found guilty of unlawfully discharging fireworks in Winchester. They were fined 50 dollars plus costs and had driving privileges restricted after 9 p.m. for tossing a firecracker onto Hunter Maddox’s front porch at 355 Miller Street, the Handley High athletic director’s home, in the early hours of July 5.

Virginia road toll tops 588 with four more deaths

The Virginia highway death toll rose to 588 for 1963 after four fatalities in traffic crashes. Benjamin Dennis III, 36, of Richmond, died when his car failed a curve on Virginia 3. Roy Croson, 62, of Fairfax, died after being struck on USS 29-211-50 near Roanoke Street. John Wade Sr., 60, and his sons John Jr. and David were injured when a wheel detached from their station wagon on U.S. 58 near Danville, crashing into a bridge abutment. Henrietta Musick, 78, of Virginia Beach died from injuries sustained Aug 9 in a two-car crash on U.S. 58 near Virginia 644.
