Sailors fought to flood magazines and beach the ship but a large explosion tore a hole in the hull causing many to drown before rescue. The vessel displaced 22340 tons and carried fifteen 12 inch guns, launched 1912, commissioned 1913.

Ollie Vance, a Winchester man, appeared before Magistrate Krebs in police court for reckless and fast driving on the Valley Turnpike Sunday afternoon. He was fined $11.50, which he paid, after being charged with racing Tred Pond whose car struck a telephone pole and was smashed, injuring Pond and Charley Taper.

Farmer Kicked To Death By Horse In West Virginia Farm Incident
Frank Fowler, about 73, was kicked by a horse on his farm near Charles Town in Jefferson County West Virginia last week. He died two days later in Charlestown Hospital after surgery. He was a Clarke County native with a long residence in Jefferson County. His widow survives with two grandchildren and is sister to Mrs. Zigler of Harrisonburg.

Friend of Lincoln Dies at 78 in Reliance
Roland DeFrees, long noted as a man of exceptional character and the walking encyclopedia, died August 11 at his daughter’s home in Reliance aged 78 years. He was born near Goshen Indiana on August 7 1888 and worked as a mechanical draftsman and engineer at Atlas Engine Works in Indianapolis for 34 years. Survived by his widow three children seven grandchildren and two sisters. Funeral service was held at Reliance and he was buried in Goshen.

Motorcycle officer C Earl Neikirk of Frederick chased C H Updike of Front Royal after a traffic stop for a paper license tag. Updike fled toward Weaverton, halted by a freight train, and was detained after Neikirk drew his revolver. He was held for a hearing on August 21 in Frederick.

New trolley line surveyed in Jefferson County route plans
Charless Town West Virginia August 15 surveyors in Jefferson county have spent weeks locating a proposed trolley line from a Potomac river point between Martinsburg and Hagerstown near Williamsport through northern county areas past the Northern Virginia Power Company's Millville plant, crossing the Potomac near Harpers Ferry into Loudoun County toward Leesburg Virginia. Eight men make up the survey team. The Shenandoah Valley Railroad formerly surveyed the same route forty years ago, now owned by Norfolk and Western Railway Company.

Faces Charge in Police Court
At 4 o clock this afternoon the trial of Fred Pond was in progress charged with operating an automobile under the influence of intoxicating liquor in Lancaster County. He also faced counts of operating a vehicle without the owner's permission and speeding within city limits after a Sunday crash on the Valley Pike south of Winchester. Attorney Harry R. Hoyt Foster of this county escaped death after his buggy was struck by an automobile on a curve near Rileyville while he dragged his horse to safety. A three mile pursuit followed as the car chased the horse toward the Shenandoah river, narrowly saving the animal from a 20 foot fall.

President Wilson Works to Avert Nationwide Railway Strike
President Wilson met with railroad managers for 1 hour 40 minutes seeking a path to end the threatened nationwide strike over an eight hour day. Managers proposed a shorter day with a neutral commission to define terms. A White House meeting at 3 pm was planned to decide the proposal. In Washington the war department said no more troops would move to the Mexican border until the strike is settled.
