Aletter from July 28, 1917, to Secretary Hodges clarifies that an advertisement claiming the Department of Education is honeycombed with subterranean politics is false. It notes Supt. Stearnes asked for confirmation from the Commission on Economy and Efficiency and states the matter continues on page four.
Miss Haney, from a prominent Winchester family, died Sunday at her West Monmouth street home after a long illness. She suffered a hemorrhage around 1 PM and died within five minutes. Surviving relatives include sister Miss Josephine B. Haney and brother Mr. John Haney. Funeral was held at 4 PM with Rev. M. Richardson officiating and interment in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
A major fire hit the Sullivan livery barn on Fairfax lane in Winchester yesterday afternoon. Water pressure failed, forcing use of antique engines and all hose lines from every firehouse. horses panicked but were rescued as flames consumed the barn and weakened nearby property. Fire officials pressed every apparatus into service to draw water from distant hydrants.
Washington August 6 The Senate finance committee reported favorably the 2 billion War revenue bill warning that more billions in taxes will be required to finance the war. The committee stated the levies are groundwork for future needs and acted with responsibility for the country and war effort.
The Federated Sunday Schools of Winchester present khaki bound Bibles to soldiers of Company I. Rev. Dr. W. D. Smith will present the Bibles at a Plaza meeting tomorrow evening August 7 at 8 o clock. Citizens urged to attend as the soldiers are to depart this week.
Crown Prince Rupprecht's forces urged night advances to regain second line positions in West Flanders but were repulsed. Heavy fighting centered near Westhoek and Hollebeke as German thrusts, aided by large forces, failed under British artillery and infantry resistance amid muddy fields and dank shell bursts.
Owing to infantile paralysis a quarantine is in effect and the excursion to Harpers Ferry on August 12 has been canceled. Tea. ik 6-1p 4t.
A notice announces an Odd Fellows reunion at Pen Mar with a special train from C. V. R. station Winchester leaving at 7 26 p m. The round trip fare is 1 26.
The first arrests under a new automobile parking law in Winchester occurred Saturday night. Four men from Frederick and nearby counties were fined $1 plus costs totaling $2.50 for parking over twenty minutes. Justice Fultz warned future offenders face $5 plus costs.
The local exemption board examined 42 of 60 men by 3 pm under theSelective Service law. Clerk Logan R Fay said nearly all un dis qualified men had filed exemption claims and examinations would continue for the full 180 men across three installments. The board faces a likely extra call to reach Winchester and Frederick county’s 89 quota.
Judge Thomas W. Harrison, congressman from the district, defends President Wilsons food control measure against misrepresentation in the Valley of Virginia. He argues the bill serves farmers and workers with practical food utilization methods and aims to prevent shortages. Sealed bids for a two room Armel Store school building are invited by the Opequon District School Board, with Mt Williams as model, bids due August 11 1917.
Voters in Frederick county Winchester and Virginia will vote from sunrise to sunset tomorrow in the Democratic primary. The campaign for state officers and legislative nominees has heated up as the election nears. Voters are cautioned to mark ballots with pencil and leave unmarked the vote for any candidate they do not intend to support.
Prices paid in the Baltimore wholesale grain market show wheat quoted around 2.35 with others at 2.30. Local dealers offered 2.38 to 2.45 for wheat in the afternoon trade. Notice to readers about an upcoming livery automobile service addition on Monday August 6th by Wm. T. Suliavan.
Yesterday large portions of Winchester lost water supply for several hours after noon causing hydrants to fail and a major blaze at Sullivan’s livery stable. Firemen lacked pressure until the Charley Rouwss truck pumped from mains, enabling water suction and suppression but the building was destroyed. The city manager’s office could not locate a cause for the outage.
Treasurer William TF Barr reports additional contribution to the Red Cross fund from Mrs. Susie L. Conrad amounting to 35 dollars. Also notes sale of yearling Angus bulls at Jno Warrick's on August 8th.
With many members absent, two drills are planned for this week. Watch for a further notice from Captain W. Baker.
Governor Stuart defends Attorney General Pollard, praising his performance and crediting him with uncovering over 263 million dollars in taxable property. He notes Pollard's heavy workload and calls him prompt, accurate, and devoted to public welfare.
In Lynchburg on July 24 1917 Carter Glass endorses John Garland Pollard for Governor from Norfolk urging a strong vote in the Second District. Glass argues Pollard offers independence courage and an honest progressive administration for the state.
The national army aid will be used to release men for farm work with temporary discharges. Local boards are instructed to grant these exemptions to those needed in crops, but they must return to service when field work ends. Deserter penalties apply if any misuse occurs.
It is likely five drafts of 100000 troops each will be summoned in intervals of one to two weeks. Initial recruits may be moved to later batches for national duties such as harvest work. No fixed call date, but September 1 is probable, with the final increment planned for late September.
General Crowder told local boards to issue temporary discharges to men needed in harvesting crops. He said the need is temporary and should end by the third or fourth week of September at latest. Boards should time judgments so the last men released are those most needed in the fields.
The drafted men will enter the service of the National Army in their home towns. Local boards will appoint the increment to be called and order the men to report at the board’s office. They will be turned over to the military department and come under regular military jurisdiction.
Dr Charles A Young of Gore county has been commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps and will report to Fort Oglethorpe on August 10. He came from Baltimore Maryland and has earned a strong local reputation as parish physician.
