Fifty-eight men examined by the Winchester Frederick county draft exemption board. Forty total men faced examinations yesterday with 32 filing exemptions and 12 discharged for disabilities. Four men from the region entered the service while two colored Winchester men and two county boys made the local roll of honor.
The Winchester and Frederick County Local Exemption Board warns examinees that board findings are not final and appeals may be made to the district board within ten days of rejection. The board explains its duty to recruit a quota of about one hundred men while noting exemptions for disabilities and other factors. Chair Luther Pannet t and Clerk Logan R Fay urge timely appeals and remind that replacements must justify why they should go instead. A colored man is sought for cleaning at Crystal Confectionery with a steady job and good wages.
The Federated Sunday Schools of Winchester plan to present khaki bound Bibles to Company I soldiers. Rev. Dr. W. D. Smith will lead a public meeting on the Plaza this evening at 8 o'clock, with Auditorium if it rains. Citizens urged to attend as the boys are due to depart soon.

The Shipping Board plans to requisition a large fleet of merchant ships flying the American flag within ten days. Since the board lacks operating capacity the ships will be chartered back to their owners after requisition, who will maintain their organizations. The move aims to create a wartime cargo surge as urgent need outpaces new tonnage.

In Frederick County a writ of prohibition halted a trespass case between brothers Fred S Lineberg and Barney R Lineberg over a private road to the Wardensville grade. Barney had blocked the gate claiming no legal right of passage. Fred removed the gate and the matter went to court.
Violent clashes reported on the Romanian frontier between the Dnieper and Prut rivers. Russians halted retirement and fought in the Perteroutz Baranove sector while assaults continued north of the Putnat valley in Moldavia to offset Austro German pressure along the Moldavia and Bystriza rivers.

Aug 7 1918 The port of New York closed to all outbound and inbound ships for five hours after reports of a German submarine off Sandy Hook. Periscope was sighted about eight miles east of the Sandy Hook light. Harbor net lowered from 1 to 6 pm as authorities restricted vessel movement.

A young Winchester driver in an automobile collided with a carriage driven by Mrs. Dointe derson near Martinsburg Pike about 14 o'clock.
