Commutes by Fast Speed Boat Between Glencoe and Chicago
James Simpson of Glencoe leads the Chicago plan commission and Marshall Field board. He uses a 33 foot Gar Wood speed boat, topping 50 mph, to commute 20 miles from Glencoe to his Merchandize Mart office, traveling about 35 mph along the lake and river most days. The boat rests at his Glencoe dock or Wilmette harbor when unused, with rough water affecting trips little and weather only modestly hindering the route. He uses the boat about 85 percent of the time.
