Entertain Company Boys and Other Local Social Bits

Eight Company E youths and friends enjoyed dancing and refreshments at a Williston gathering on a Friday night. Local society notes include delegates elected for a state federation meeting in Dickinson and a 62nd birthday surprise for F. L. Barnfather near Williston. Grace Lois Mills and Richard F. Mills announce their forthcoming wedding in October. Lonnie Milton Hall and Wilhelmina Kathryn Baker wed quietly in Brainerd. The Equal Franchise Club plans a library meeting on presidential electors. A Mary Leidner and Allan Bain marriage occurs Sept 8 in Minneapolis with Bain moving to Fargo. Soldiers are entertained by A. O. U. W. and Degree of Honor with supper and a program.

The North Dakota Agricultural College Extension Department will hire eight additional women as Home Demonstration Agents to work in eight state districts. They will focus on food conservation and home management, with districts headquartered in Minot Rugby Larimore Wahpeton Carlington Bismarck Mandan Mott. A city circuit will include Williston Minot Devils Lake Grand Forks Fargo Valley City Jamestown Bismarck Dickinson.

Strength of War Forces Estimated by Government Journal

Washington reports Chairman Dent released figures from public records showing on September 6, 1917 the regular army National Guard and reserve corps had 78 828 officers and 741 053 enlisted men. Navy enlisted 141 867 with 41 473 reserves and 14 500 naval militia. Coast guard 5 000 and hospital corps 6 500 total armed strength 1 074 146, all volunteers. no draft troops yet, draft law approved May 18, 1917.
