Secretary of War William H. Taft sailed aboard the steamship Minnesota from Seattle on Thursday afternoon. He appeared in good spirits after addressing the State Medical association in the morning, chatting with his party as crowds waved from the docks. Accompanying him were his wife and son Charlie, Fred W. Carpenter, Gen Clarence Edwards, Judge Thomas Burke, W. F. Backus, Thomas J. O'Brien, and Peter Augustus Jay among others bound for the orient and the Alas Yukon-Pacific exposition entourage.

Students beaten by town toughs in Lafayette riot
In a riot near Purdue University Friday six students were seriously injured and 15 more badly beaten when returning from a dance. A rush of city toughs sparked the clash. five assailants were arrested after police and townspeople joined the injured on the levee. John Miller and M. J. McChesney of Charleston W Va were among the most seriously hurt.

Chicago Bank Wrecker Must Serve Out his Full Term
Joliet Illinois September 14 Paul C Stensland former president of the collapsed Milwaukee Avenue State Bank of Chicago must serve his full term in Joliet penitentiary. The state board of pardons refused to grant release and Stensland will be freed after eight years and three months for good behavior. Without deductions the maximum penalty is fourteen years.
