Engineers say Williston irrigation canals will be filled Saturday or early next week as machinery nears completion. The river pumps barge has been launched and will be in place by week’s end, with residents eager to watch water flow from the new system.
A fatal threshing accident occurred last Sunday on the Smith farm near Buffalo. T L Shephard, age about forty, was killed when the separator top collapsed, crushing his head and nearly tearing his arm away. He died within thirty minutes after being taken to the house, leaving a wife and five children in Mason City. Funeral services were led by Rev Elton of the Episcopal church. One brother lives in Wyoming. another had recently been shot.
The Metropole Hotel in Fargo encountered a visitor, Frank Bridge, described as a smooth hobo painter. Several unregistered rooms were found occupied, and Sunday night staff entered a rear door to find Bridge sleeping amid ragged clothes. He was ejected, with plans to avoid the hotel in the future.
Judge Davis the government special agent arrived from Minot to oversee district contests in the Land Office. Glen Thompson of Minot serves as stenographer. Davis will review contests on file, decide those with testimony, and schedule hearings for the rest amid heavy past-year proof work.
Jack Sykes, injured at the Avoca mine last week by a dynamite cap explosion, dies in hospital Saturday night. His remains are buried in Williston cemetery.
The North Dakota Department of Agriculture exhibits impress eastern audiences at fairs. The Indiana Star praises Commissioner Gilbreath’s display for size and quality of grains grasses vegetables potatoes pottery minerals and educational literature inviting homeseekers to the state.
North Dakota promotion articles claim eastern and central farmers seek land north and west. W C Gilbreath notes the exhibit impressed progressive Wisconsin leaders, including Congressman Murphy, with North Dakota grains and grasses outperforming Wisconsin. Illinois seed dealers and Chicago traders also praised ND seed quality and cereals. Real estate dealers and chambers of commerce gathered, praising North Dakota products and opportunities.
Rev. Henness travels Tuesday to Wahpeton for a short visit then proceeds as the Congregational church representative from the district to the National Council in Cleveland Ohio. The council meets once every three years and he is the district's sole representative.
John Crouch formerly of Seven Bar Meat Market has purchased his own machinery and will open a first class meat market two doors west of Odd Fellows Hall on Broadway. Crouch is a well known Williston figure and expects good patronage.
