The school board and wives held a reception at the library last Friday night to acquaint guests. Guests displayed needlework skills with a Mother Goose theme, featuring scenes like the cow jumping over the moon and cat and fiddle. Light refreshments followed as attendees socialized and networked.
John F Heffernan returns to Albany New York for a second year at the Albany School of Law. He spent the summer with his parents John Heffernan and his wife and previously studied two years at Grand Forks and one year at Notre Dame Indiana.
A group including Camp in McKenzie Dr. and Mrs. Baker Mr and Mrs George McIntosh Miss Oleta Lukins Dora Boyd Cora Boyd H C Skarie Austin Belyea Eldridge Whiman Oscar Prebble and John Harris were on a camping and hunting excursion at Charley Howett ranch in McKenzie county this week.
Half of the candidates passed the prescribed test in the last teachers examination and the first under the new law. First grade certificates were awarded to Mable Arndt of Carrington and Gena Ausland of Bonetraill. Second grade went to Thomas W. Bickell of Wheelock, Gertrude M. Hanley of Ray, Mrs. Anna Morgan of Williston, and Margaret Packard of Wheelock.
Drs Kron L O Kron and Jones began a trip Tuesday morning in the Kron machine aiming for the farmers' field near Kenmare. They expect to remain several days in the area.
The Scotty Philip arrived Sunday from White City and loaded at the G N dock Monday before returning Tuesday. It has served Le Beau for three years under a Minneapolis and St. Louis railway contract and recently came upriver after the contract expired. The Philip will enter the grain trade between here and White City, alternating trips with the Fort Pierre this fall. The first grain movement from there began this week.
A fire gutted The West Hotel north of the round house early Tuesday. Firemen reached the scene at 2:10 am and water streams fought the blaze through two floors and the garret, ending with roof loss. Owner Sam Fonderberg and former manager Mrs. Johnson are named. insurance set at 1800 dollars.
Typhoid Edward Crane of the Auto Mart Varriage is confined to a hospital with typhoid fever. This is the first case in the city to be reported at this writing.
Heavy rains across the district sent the Missouri River rising rapidly by five feet at a point, flooding snags near Mandan and forcing the Mandan to halt operations. The vessel reached town for dock time before resuming snagging duties, as the deluge affected the Milk River valley.
Sundayed at Pleasant View with the Sharp, Tatem, Atterbury, Asbury and Smith families and Mr. Jacobson. A sumptuous dinner crowned a day greatly enjoyed by all as the party sauted out to the farm.
Mayor Jackson convened the first advisory board meeting with six of eight appointees present in the council rooms. The group reviewed city finances and management, and discussed assessment methods and power plant improvements as it moves toward a businesslike administration.
Foreign born individuals listed will petition to be admitted to full citizen rights at a district court session convened by Judge Fisk on Monday, October 2 at 10 o clock. Names include Spring Brook Martin Johnson Torger Wilard Hansten Vallevik and many others across communities such as Hofflund Marmon Tioga Scott Ray Cottonwood Lake Gladys Stella Trenton Wheelock and more.
Bodies of Alex Peters and his wife were sent east Thursday afternoon by Emil Wagoner a brother in law who arrived after the incident Abe Peters a New Weston Ohio relative stays with the children and will repatriate them to Ohio. Children attended dinner at Dr Distad and show strength for travel by Saturday if no complications arise.
George Conway and R. Maruka, both round house employees, were badly scalded by steam Monday evening while working on locomotive 105 of the fast mail. The plug blew out a boiler head causing a scalding vapor. Conway jumped from the cab window and suffered facial burns as well as burns to the hips chest and arms. Maruka was burned on the head arms and one leg. Doctors say the burns will sideline them for some time but are not expected to be life threatening.
Company E hosted its second dance of the year at the opera house last Friday. About fifty couples attended at first but as receptions and delegations arrived the crowd grew, reaching eighty five couples on the floor by eleven. Estad's orchestra provided lively music as attendees enjoyed a festive evening with friends and escorts.
The first, third and seventh grades taught by Miss Brown Moe and Grindley were closed Monday for fumigation after a diphtheria scare when Mrs McGaw's young son contracted a mild case. He was taken to the detention hospital with his mother and is improving. All grades resumed Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs J C Jackson and Mr and Mrs J Arthur Cunningham drove to Howard County Sunday for a hunting trip lasting several days into the week with the men of the party taking part in the outing.
Tuesday Judge Butler issued a marriage license to Peter Lang berg and Maren Jacobson, both of Bonetraill.
The library reports rising use with July total 969 books split 548 adult 421 juvenile and August up 319 to 1288 total. New titles include Montgomery Anne of Green Gables, Richmond The Second Violin, Finnemore The Wolf Patrol, Pyle The Counterpane Fairy, and The District Attorney about a financier’s son opposing his father.

Friday afternoon Mrs. Hugh Nolan hosted Ila Katheleen Nolan’s first birthday party. Five young guests Bessie Walker Ada Clair Brownson Minnie Townsend Vivian Townsend and Hazel Brant attended as candlelight revealed decades of room decorations while the party marked a first milestone in life.
John Martin of Indianapolis Indiana is selling Life and Health a Washington DC magazine recently released from hospital after an operation. The young seller aims to finance his schooling through the sales.
