Fargo August 27 In legal circles the attorney general's opinion outlines sheriffs as the chief peace officer of the county directly answerable to the governor. If derelict, the governor may dismiss the sheriff with no appeal. The governor ordered copies of the opinion sent to every county sheriff.
A. J. Eayle and Miss Katherine Brackett, prominent Rolette County residents, drowned when their canoe capsized on Lake Upsilon Sunday evening. Eayle, a St. John hardware businessman, and Brackett, a deputy in a county office, were found unable to reach shore. their mothers watched in distress from the bank amid the tragedy.
The September issue surveys methods to reduce the cost of wholesome food and features Upton Sinclair's experiments for tackling high living costs under the caption How To Live On Ten Cents a Day. It also includes Raymond Duncan defending his attire amid criticism, along with pieces on Bath and beauty, Harvest in national health, Olive and food value, Frank Gotch, care for the blind, and more timely articles.
Judge Kneeshaw ruled that June supreme court decisions did not create Burke and Renville counties until county officials were appointed, allowing votes to be counted. Burre and Renville electors could vote, and Nehemiah Davis and L. P. Weatherwax remained nominees for county offices amid certification delays.
G E Yonker of Harvey starts an auto livery in the city offering trips anywhere. He operates Ford cars and can be reached by phone at 67.
Nash Brothers of Grand Forks closed a deal for four First Avenue West plots from W. B. Overson. They will erect a large wholesale house this fall or next spring on the southeast corner near the Gates Opera house, with all buildings to be removed by September fifteenth. Founda tion work to start this fall. A. Garrison of the Boston Store reports buying a record stock of ladies goods from eastern markets.
Miss Taylor, formerly in charge of the Millinery department at Greengard, opens a new millinery shop in the Calderwood building on Main Street. Her staff includes Miss Isabel Bergum, Miss Jennie Carlson, Miss Maggie Montgomery, and Miss Zella Shepherd. The shop offers ready to wear hats and plans to announce dress and pattern hats soon. The Congregational church will resume regular services this Sunday, September 4, with the pastor preaching morning and evening.

Miss McNiven entertained a party of friends on Friday evening at her sister Mrs. F. H. Smiths home. The event honored her cousin Miss Currie of London visiting the city. The rooms gleamed with sweet peas and nasturtiums as music and games preceded a four course luncheon. North Dakotans will give Colonel Roosevelt a warm reception in Fargo on September 9. The state and its people, including former cattle interests and Dakota hospitality, celebrate his homecoming with pride.
In Time for Fair at the Dacotah Hotel Mr and Mrs H Desmond welcomed a baby boy at 4 p m on August 30. Grandfather P A White predicts a future base singer from the child’s mouth and lungs. Mother and baby are dying nicely. the grandfather and father deserve cigars for pride.
The flax crop remains vital to North Dakota and the Northwest as a major money maker. It can be saved from decline through clean seed, seed disinfection, proper crop rotation, and careful planting on newer soils to prevent root fungi and disease. Continued discussion promised on page four.
One hundred eighty people attended the Methodist Sunday school Picnic at Wilson's Grove on Friday. The crowd, mainly women and children, enjoyed abundant food and a relaxed day. A notable event was a baseball game where married, young, and older ladies played while Rev. Walford umpired, often bemused by calls.
