Washington August 23. In coal land cases entrymen who file an election may receive final receipts from the local land office upon satisfactory proof. The order applies to final proofs withholding due to coal land rulings and benefits those who offered proof but lacked final receipts. Dennett Commissioner.

Louis Smith a sixteen year old son of a prosperous Lawton area farmer suffered a near total leg severing last Thursday when the harvester machine snapped to life while he stood before the knife. He was rushed to Devils Lake where doctors reset the limb hoping it would knit and spare amputation.
The ladies of the M E secure Dr S Paige Johnson for an entertainment at Gates Opera House on Thursday evening September 2. Johnson is hailed as an orator and impersonator, promising the season’s greatest treat. Reserve seats at Swab and Rather's drug store. admission is 60 cents.

Ben Olson is acting as deputy sheriff and his son Ben Olson Jr. is slated to become the boss. The younger Olson arrived last Thursday night at Fargo hospital where Mrs. Olson has been for some time. Congratulations are offered.
Complications arise in Mountrail Burke Renville and Sheridan counties over placing city names on the ballot for temporary county seats. No state law provides a method and counsel is seeking a settlement so county election officials know how to proceed.
Smoke from large forest fires in the western states spread across the Northwest this week, forcing lights on during daytime and ash to fall in several cities including Havre and Great Falls. Fires caused numerous deaths and extensive timber loss across Idaho, Montana, and beyond as authorities described ongoing efforts to battle the flames.
A. L. Woods progressive candidate for state superintendent of public instruction dies suddenly at his Grand Forks home at 1002 Belmont avenue after a heart attack. He leaves a wife and two sons. Woods, born in Troy Maine in 1856, held multiple public education roles and was active in the Commercial club and state fairs. The library commission and state library association plan a joint Fargo Moorhead meeting Sept 30–Oct 1 with Chalmers Hadley as principal speaker.
The ice cream social and entertainment at the Spring Coulee schoolhouse Saturday evening drew about seventy five attendees. The ladies cleared nearly twenty dollars over expenses and gave the pastor a present equal to his services.
Paul Broskoski a 50 year old Russian farmer living four miles northwest of Squires died in a runaway last Saturday and was burned by a prairie fire. The coroners inquest found death immediate and the fire started likely by a cigarette. He was married with four children reportedly en route from the old country. Funeral services were held at the church and he was buried in the Russian burial ground near Squires.
