The stove explosion, likely gas build up, spread smoke and flames to every room, gutting the building and contents within an hour. Mrs Mathews, owner, and Mrs Nelson tenant, suffered losses with little insurance. Boarders Howard Bohn and Mrs Miller lost clothing, belongings, and in Mrs Miller’s case $44 cash. A sick boarder was rescued from his room as flames spread. Police and firemen faced sensational rumors later debunked.
