War hospital memoirs from Etaples and Dixmude
An injured soldier recalls hospital life after shell bursts, detailing the grim routine of treatment, the magnet bed, and surgical procedures. He describes nurses’ dedication, morale with cigarettes and food, and a Belgian patient recounting German atrocities in St. Quentin and Dixmude, ending with reflections on fighting the German people, not just the Kaiser.

The Cassard Fights Through Dardanelles Action
I recall returning to the ship at Brest after hospital discharge and joining the Cassard for the Dardanelles mission. Gun captain of the starboard bow turret, I oversaw two 14 inch guns as shells and steel flew during the bombardment, braces of armor damaged and the turret roof torn off by a direct hit. The scene near Cape Helles and V beach grew chaotic as Dupleix landed troops and Kum Kaleb batteries responded.
