McAdoo raises rail rates to fund war costs

Washington May 27 Director General McAdoo orders a 25 percent increase in railroad freight rates and passenger fares raised to three cents a mile to cover higher coal and supply costs. The plan aims to bring 800 to 900 million dollars in new revenue next year and will be reviewed by the Interstate Commission.

War Emblems for Scouts and Liberty Bond Drive

Boy Scouts earning ten subscrip tions to Liberty Bonds or cultivating ten gardens qualify for war service emblems. National reports show over 10 300 troops participated and about 10 000 medals won. Liberty bonds sold to roughly 150 000 individuals, totaling about 24 million dollars. Emblems to bear treasury seal will be presented by federal officials.

Boy Scouts assist the Red Cross committee by rolling bandages and carrying material. They helped load and move supplies and vehicles as part of a relief effort. Local scouts collected old shoes to aid boys and girls in France and Belgium with France and Belgium relief support.
