Williston Represented at University Declamation and Track

Williston students Cecil McKay and Vera Seeley competed in the declamation contest while Walker McGuiness ran the fifty and hundred yard dashes and the pole vault. Superintendant Ellithorpe and Principal McAndrew attended a principals conference discussing next year’s plans and the push for more industrial courses.

Decoration Day Program in Williston May 31

The Williston event features Rev F S Hollett leading songs Catch the Step as We Did in Days of Old and Star Spangled Banner by the Male Chorus. Decorations of graves by school children, patriotic music, and a march to the cemetery with the Williston Concert Band and local regiments. Rides, parades, and honors for old soldiers at the cemetery begin 10:30 A M with bands and civic league support.

Senators Clash Over Lumber Rate in Senate Debate

Washington May 22 The lumber schedule sparked a senate clash as McCumber proposed free lumber replacing the Dingley tariff and the House rate. The debate forewent a vote, leaving the field to argument. McCumber argued no protection needed while Borah warned tariffs won t exhaust forests.

Great Northern Adds Eight Daily Passenger Trains at Williston

The new Great Northern schedule, effective Sunday, increases Williston to eight passenger trains daily. Time changes are minor with train number two arriving at 1 05 PM instead of 5 25 PM, while trains one and two run through from Chicago eliminating car transfers at the Twin Cities. A new local runs from here west to Hayre, departing 7 30 AM and reaching the west at 8 15 PM.

Gilbreath Honored by National Corn Association

President Eugene D. Funk appoints W. C. Gilbreath of Bismarck as North Dakota vice-president of the National Corn Association. Gilbreath, in his role as Commissioner of Agriculture, will prepare an exhibit for the National Corn Exposition in Omaha December 6 to 18, strengthening ties with grain crop advocates. The association treats corn in a continental sense, including small grains grown in North Dakota.

Johnson and O'Brien Fight Ends In Close Six Round Draw

Philadelphia May 19 Jack Johnson the heavyweight champion failed to beat Jack O'Brien in a six round bout. The match was even with many spectators claiming a draw if a decision were allowed. O'Brien used fast footwork and blocking to limit Johnsons blows while Johnson appeared slow and tired. O'Brien landed a sharp cut in the fifth, and both men displayed grit as referee McGuigan praised Obrien. OBrien expressed interest in a future match with Al Kaufman in San Francisco.

Williston High Commencement to Be Held at Gates Opera House

Commencement exercises for Williston High will take place Friday evening at Gates opera house. Eleven graduates will participate in a program featuring the Williston Orchestra, recitations, class history, essays, and the presentation of diplomas by C C Mackenroth.

Williston Races To Be Best Ever At Fair Grounds Meet

Entries for the Williston race meet at the fair grounds June 8 9 and 10 grow daily with 40 horses already here and expected to reach 150. Eastern horses are shipping west due to pool selling prohibition and entrants include two from New York and several from other eastern states along with six from Oklahoma and Montana and a carload from Denver. The track is praised as immaculate and stalls are being expanded to 75 with need for more. Class entries close June 1 and the 2:30 trot and 2:15 pace or trot close June 15 with ten horses in the 2:30 and six in the 2:15.
