H W Buckbee of Rockford Illinois and wife toured the area this week. Buckbee owns a major seed house and oversees land here as part of a regular inspection trip. Southard Dies in First Solo Flight at Dayton
Frederick J. Southard aviation student from Minneapolis perished at Simmons Field Dayton Ohio while making his first solo flight. Despite warnings from Wright Brothers instructors he took off with a mechanic present the engine quit at about 100 feet causing the craft to roll over and crush him instantly. Interment planned in Benton Michigan and Southard had recently relocated from Minneapolis where he worked in land and loan business.

Minneapolis May 18 delegates of the Methodist Episcopal general conference voted 446 to 369 to keep paragraph 260 in church discipline ban dancing card playing and similar amusements. W O Shepherd led on the fifth ballot with 500 votes but fell short of 530 to win. Ballots were sealed until Monday morning to maintain a quiet Sabbath, after a bid by Rev. Frank Doran to seal them to curb Sunday politics discussions.
