Secretary of the State Alfred Blaisdell of Minot heads a reform drive in North Dakota's secretary of state office. A new accounting system tracks each department’s expenditures, curbs extravagance, and aims to save dollars by year end with cooperation from the governor and fellow officials.
The High School Declamation contest at the courthouse Friday drew a strong turnout. Contestants Vera Major Violet Bride Bertha Deriger George Schafer and Ivan Metzger performed well with George Schafer winning first honors. Schafer will represent Williston High School at the state contest in Grand Forks May 17 and 18.
In Bismarck North Dakota on May 4 states attorneys were informed that express companies will ensure compliance with liquor shipment laws. Deliveries may be accepted only for bona fide purchasers. The old practice of delivering to mythical individuals will end. Offices and depots for storage of liquors are prohibited.

In the neighborhood excitement grows over an alleged oil find with Standard Oil representatives and many prospectors on site. Well diggers report indisputable indications of oil and leases for prospecting have been made. Drills operate in several spots as geology favors a shallow dip. A small boom forms as people travel from nearby towns.
Jess Skinner of Bird Island Minnesota died instantly after stepping from an extension bridge on the G N line above Buford. He, 34, left a wife and four children and was part of a four man crew. an inquest returned a verdict of accidental death. The body was sent to Bird Island.
State Insurance Commissioner E. C. Cooper releases a tabulated statement listing premiums received by insurance companies operating in fire department cities across North Dakota. The report details city shares required by law, a two percent tax, and apportionment figures for several larger cities.
J. G. Stroud opened the Bijou theatre Monday evening to a crowded house. The program featured songs, piano solos, and moving pictures. Miss Bertha Deriger and Miss Mae Anderson assisted and both gave clear performances. Stroud touts a fine moving picture machine and plans entertainments nightly with low ten to fifteen cent admission, promising steady crowds.
The Northwest Dakota Base Ball League starts play next Sunday with Williston vs Mondak. Cold weather limited practice but teams expect a strong opening. At White Earth a decision guaranteed home-team expenses, signaling a large crowd.
Mrs. Wim Pape reports their daughter Clara was injured Thursday afternoon near a coal wagon. She climbed inside and became caught between wheel and box, dislocating her ankle. She is progressing as well as could be expected.
