The Great Northern Racing Circuit begins in Williston on June 8 with 25 to 30 local horses and 50 to 70 outsiders expected. Races listed include pace and trot classes, dashes, and stakes across June 8 to 10, promising exciting, fast competition.

Water charges must be paid for irrigation lands

Washington May 3 The secretary of the interior orders that no water will be furnished on the Williston irrigation project in North Dakota until all operation and maintenance charges due for preceding years are paid. Charges due by December 1 1908 must be paid by December 1 1909 to avoid cancellation of entry or water right applications. The suspension applies to 1909. no water will be provided in 1910 until charges are paid.

Norwegian National Day Observed in Williston

Williston will observe the Norwegian national holiday May 17 with church services at the courthouse May 16 at 8 p.m. Rev. Alb. Johanson will officiate using the Lutheran liturgy and special music will be performed. A. J. Stafne offers five acre irrigated tracts near Williston for sale on liberal monthly payments.

Minimum freight rate in North Dakota restored

North Dakota state board of railroad commissioners ordered the restoration of the pre January 1 1909 freight rates for small shipments under 100 pounds. The board had heard public complaints after a new minimum charge tied to 100 pounds was adopted, and ruled that rates in effect before January 1 should be reinstated.

Excavation Awarded for West Lawn School Project

Bids for the erection of the new school in West Lawn were opened Saturday night and the contract awarded to Emmett and Bartleson of Minot for 15 520. The contract requires completion by August 20. Contractors began excavating this morning and will push the work to finish promptly. Farm Loan Williston Land Company.

Valley City Fire Ravages Burnham Block and Nearby

A dramatic Valley City blaze caused $50 000 in damage after an explosion near a fountain. The Burnham cafe on the first floor and Dr Platou’s offices on the second were ruined. The Rudolph hotel wall and Bijou theatre area were damaged and Mayor Cowell was injured by flying glass.

Terribly Burned While Rescuing Their Horses

Frank and Verne Tanner two young men from near Squires were seriously burned Tuesday while trying to rescue six horses from a burning barn. They saved three horses before three perished. Both boys suffered burns on the head neck and arms and are in critical condition at Williston hospital after being driven there by J B Northup following medical aid.

Injured by Horses After Barn Dog Fight

Frank Haggett driving L. N. Sheldon’s team was nearly killed when two dogs fighting in the barn spooked the horses. Haggett was knocked down and kicked, suffering head and rib injuries while the horse foot caught in its halter helped prevent a worse fate. Sheldon intervened to calm the animals.

Senator Johnson Moves to Remove Hamilton Statue Plan

Washington May 3. Senator M N Johnson of North Dakota introduced a resolution repealing a prior memorial for a Hamilton statue in the public square. He said he wants Hamilton forgotten and suggested placing the statue on ground elsewhere if built.

North Dakota's agricultural department plans a 36 by 40 inch wall map showing proposed rail lines post offices and county land counts with 1909 population estimates and institutional sketches. A booklet will illustrate public institutions with concise histories to showcase state facilities and education.

Chapman Reinstated as North Dakota Bank Examiner

F B Chapman, formerly a bank examiner, has been reinstated as national bank examiner for North Dakota after having withdrawn from the post when he ran for state senate from Williams county. The reinstatement followed a recent appointment.

Western flyer wreck near Delano causes injuries

Great Northern passenger train No. 3 known as the flyer, westbound, struck a light engine at Delano Minnesota last night. Two day coaches burned and about twenty passengers were seriously injured. Engineer Andrew Waresson of St Paul, son of the train crew, was likely among the injured. The wreck involved a freight engine that stalled on the line.

Report of the Register of Deeds April 1900 disbursements

The Register of Deeds submits the April 1900 report detailing disbursements for postage stamps tools and stationery, fees for grants and grants and grantee index work. The note states instruments are recorded through April 29 1909 and that the office is up to date with grantor and grantee books. The registrar reports net revenue exceeding county costs by 1233.50 for April 1909.

Declamation Contest At Gates Opera House

On May 12 at the Gates Opera House the high school will stage a declamatory contest to choose a young man and a young woman to represent the school at the state event May 21 and 22 at the University. Eight students have prepared a lively program, tickets sold to cover travel expenses for the trip to Grand Forks. Reserved seats 50c, general 35c, children 25c.
