Governor designates April 30 as Arbor Day to promote tree planting across the state. Officials urge commercial clubs and schools to organize exercises and plant trees around homes, public buildings, and school grounds to advance forestry and beauty in North Dakota.
The supervising engineer in charge of reclamation work in North Dakota plans a detailed reconnaissance of the Little Missouri Knife Heart and Cannon Ball rivers. Previous surveys found no large feasible projects but may be small efforts with two or three parties to survey irrigable lands and storage sites.
George Newton expects Governor Sarles to travel to Libertyville, Illinois, early next week for upcoming races next month. Newton says the governor is in excellent condition and faster than last year, aiming for a top finish after last season’s strong record.
The B and T club met with Mrs Ellsthorpe on April 21 with eighteen members and three visitors. They considered securing the Overson building near the post office at 25 dollars a month to establish a permanent library, and unanimously approved pursuing the project if community funds are raised. Subscriptions were to be circulated. The district meeting in Minot on May 5 and 6 was announced.
Senator McCumber introduced an amendment favored by northwestern flour millers and the bureau of manufacturers to grant Holland a tariff concession on flowering bulbs exported to the United States. The plan would replace the 25 percent ad valorem tariff with a specific levy of 5 to 10 cents per hundred, aiming to keep Dutch growers satisfied and prevent retaliatory action that could jeopardize up to 5 million dollars in bulb trade.
The Ladies Aid of the Congregational church will hold a supper in the Methodist church basement next Tuesday evening May 4. All are invited to attend and enjoy the food provided.
The state of Texas pays nearly two million dollars ending a long court battle with Waters-Pierce Oil. Officials and banking representatives witnessed the transfer of 718 thousand dollar bills 160 ten dollar notes and the rest in small currency. The state gains 1 718 266 30 with Prosecuting Attorney Brady receiving the balance as his fee.
Judge Templeton of Grand Forks scheduled May 11 for the arguments in a workers’ suit from Burke and Renville counties against Ward county to nullify the Kenmare vote of 592 as illegal Inspectors did not meet fall procedures or correct the registration list If the Kenmare tally is erased Burke and Renville would prevail leaving Ward reduced to townships in the southeast part of the old county representing about a quarter of its former size.
Bismarck North Dakota April 23 reports an effort to raise capital to purchase the Palladium and run it as an evening daily with a local business syndicate at the helm. If completed control would pass from E G Patterson to an independent daily.
Grand Forks April 23 Elmer Swenson who was elected assessor of Elm Grove township did not receive the assessor's books though he bought real estate and recorded the deed the law requires the assessor be a property owner State's Attorney Bangs says Swenson must own real estate at election J E Eastgate appointed to the office when Swenson could not act was given the assessor's books today
North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner C. Gilbreath aims to display extensive grains and grasses at the National Corn Exposition in Omaha December 6 to 18. He seeks a prime main-building location, notes a St Louis exhibit drew international attention, and mentions special premiums for northern small grains to compare North Dakota wheat with world and state growers.
The Anderson Hardware Company has hired I. K. Oleson as a competent first class all around tiner. With two tiners now in the shop, they are prepared to handle tinning jobs promptly.
In Bismarck on April 23 the state auditor’s office issued warrants for eighty thousand dollars to claimants for indemnity related to the killing of horses suffering from glanders. Many claims were paid as fast as properly filed. some cases await proper forms. Additional claims may come in while funds remain available.
A big Farmers dance is set for Friday at Gates Opera House with music by the Onstad orchestra. Tickets cost one dollar and all city boys and girls are invited to enjoy a social evening. The ad also notes a store advertising campaign can rejuvenate sales quickly.
Williston announces its market day on Saturday May 15 with commission-based sales. Listings incur a 1 percent listing fee plus 1 percent or 2 percent commissions on live stock household goods and machinery. Goods must be listed on grounds or Golden Rule store between 10 AM and 1 PM with sale starting at 1 PM. M A Oleson is manager.

Thieves entered the city auditor and engineer rooms in the Rawson block Saturday night and cut open the minutes and financial ledgers from the past four to five years. The missing records were recovered Monday afternoon after being found by railroad worker North in the yards Sunday. A $500 reward stands for evidence leading to the guilty party.
Sheriff Olson States Attorney Braatelien and two deputies arrested Paddy Armstrong and his man Wat Edgar last week in Kermit after a raid on the pigg ers. Armstrong posted 900 bonds and faces district court. Edgar is jailed and likely to plead guilty. An amusing arrival followed as officers prevented a pig from escaping. Olson notes his patrol method uses mobile coverage to surprise lawbreakers before warning spreads. An irrigation land sale ad follows from A J Staine offering five acre tracts near Wiliston with monthly payments.
In Flaxton near the Great Northern road a group of about a dozen Lig nite women armed with hatchets revolvers and gasoline burned down a blind pig operated by Oscar Sampson after demolishing its contents. They warned other joints to shut or face similar action. Phillip Lemph and his wife were arrested yesterday while Lemph attempted to flee four miles from town. Sampson escaped.
