President Taft asks Congress to revise the Dingley tariff, convening an extraordinary session. He cites changing production conditions and looming deficit, urging rapid, thorough consideration of a new tariff bill and possible new revenue sources. Wim H Taft.
L eight Champine formerly of Minot and M J O Malley of Langdon arrived last night to launch a land and loan firm serving this and McKenzie counties. Head office will be in Williston with a Schafer branch. They boast strong backing and aim to serve farmers well. Champine has 25 years in the state and recent Minneapol is business, while O Malley leads Langdon Lumber and is a top local businessman. They receive a hearty welcome to the City of Opportunity.
The two year old son of Mr and Mrs Ben Goldman died Tuesday evening from burns suffered when he fell into a boiler of hot water on Monday. He died about twenty eight hours later. Funeral services were held yesterday and he was buried in the Jewish cemetery across the river.
William Carney brother of James Carney of Williston Hospital died Saturday morning from a perforated bowel after weeks of illness. Funeral services were held Monday at 10 in the Catholic church with Father Arsenault officiating. Interment followed in Williston cemetery. Carney was twenty years old leaving a father, mother, six brothers and four sisters.
A Bit O Blarney presented at Gates Opera House drew one of the largest crowds in city history. Judging by the applause, the performance pleased the audience and organizers, signaling strong interest in more home talent plays locally.
District court in Minot recessed due to Judge Goss illness. He has been indisposed for two days but will be in court tomorrow. Several important cases are scheduled this week with a term at Williston planned soon.
Strayed from Abram Miller’s place about February 19 near Williston North Dakota. A bay pony with a blocky build, low head, two white hind feet, long slim tail, and a long white striped forehead. Reward of $10 for information leading to recovery. Address Abram Miller Williston North Dakota.
Ed Drake chased John Etzell through the Rawson block after a feud turned violent. Drake produced a three foot revolver and overpowered Etzell while others fled. Drake was arrested and bonded at $1000. Hearing for Etzell was continued to the 23rd.
Special meeting of the Williston County Commissioners is called for March 22 to decide providing seed grain to Rudser Marmon district settlers aided last year. Officials note many families remain without funds to buy seed, under a winter bill allowing grain aid to needy farmers. Shelled corn priced at 1.40 and cracked corn at 1.50 per hundred at Hast Broadway Feed Store.
Taft calls an extraordinary session to revise tariffs with aims to conclude by June 1. The record tracks prior special sessions, listing presidents, dates, and outcomes including notable tariff actions and wars looming over congressional adjournments.
The Mondell coal and land law broadens pat ent issuance to homesteaders in the northwest. It grants patents with coal reservations but requires proof that land is not chiefly valuable for coal. Senator McCumber notes settlers gain hearings on coal deposits and may receive full patents unless coal value prevails. Approved March 3, 1909.
Minot North Dakota invites checker players to a state tournament at the Commercial Club rooms March 24 25 and 26 starting 2 PM. Three prizes will be awarded and participants will set the rules. The committee anticipates strong attendance led by D A Rutledge former Sons champion.
Fire starting in the Moulton pool room around 4 am destroyed four frame buildings in Aneta North Dakota threatening much of the business district. H L Moulton owned two of the burned properties including the pool room and the Aneta Athletic club gym. The other two belonged to C H Stevens with Hoff's barber shop in one and the other empty. Losses total about 6000 with roughly half covered by insurance.
Oscar Martin, one of the recent prison escapees from Deputy McKay, was arrested in McKenzie county early this week by August Matteson. He was taken to Williston Monday and placed in the county jail.
