Missouri River Ice Breaks Up Early This Week
The Missouri River split its ice on Monday afternoon around five o clock in one of the earliest breakups on record. Floods from Montana and Yellowstone contributed to the surge, causing the river to surge over the wing dam where forty men were working. The dam’s piles snapped and the structure was carried away as ice moved only a short distance before gorging. Cold nights have since frozen the river again, but a few warm days could push the water higher and force another breakup. Some flats above town flooded, prompting evacuations, and a man and team were reported lost near Trenton.
