Washington February 26 Representative Charles Townsend Michigan author of the administration railroad measure defended the plan against charges of a joker. He argued regulation aims to make paper represent tangible value and to curb wildcat schemes while not crippling legitimate enterprises.
W B Overson of Williston visits Washington urging passage of Senator McCumber’s bill delaying water rights payments on the Williston friction projects. He says the Interior Department would back the measure and notes the bill proposes first payments in 1912 at 2 dollars per acre plus 1 dollar maintenance, with subsequent years at 3.50 dollars per acre.
A national crusade against the common house fly is launched by the American Civic association in Washington. Secretary Richard B. Watrous oversaw a district building exhibition of 12 minute films dramatizing the typhoid fly lifecycle to urge public cleaning up and distribution of the films nationwide. The reel shows flies enlarged to grotesque sizes feeding on food and contaminating a baby’s nursing bottle as a stark warning.
Saskatchewan government guarantees bonds for a Grand Trunk Pacific railway from Regina through Arcola to the Estevan area near Hirsch and Estevan, aiming to connect Regina Edmonton Prince Rupert. Souris and Bottineau county citizens press to secure the line as Great Northern and Grand Trunk Pacific cooperate on a direct link between twin cities and the Pacific coast.
The February 28 gathering in Williston drew crowds, sparking plans for a farmers institute. Letters from James J. Hill and Louis Hill were read, and speakers from the Great Northern company, the Agricultural College, banks, and local merchants urged cooperation to boost North Dakota’s agriculture and economy.

Incensed by high charges Minot residents plan a campaign to force lower rates from the Minot Light and Telephone Co. They point to Moorhead prices and a 1909 tax figure as proof of overvaluation and watered stock. The drive seeks reductions in electric light heat and telephone charges, noting recent rate increases and shifts to oil and party lines.
The Great Northern and Northern Pacific plan a combined 1910 equipment purchase totaling 13.5 million dollars. The fleets will include passenger cars, locomotives, freight rolling stock, and specialized cars with orders placed last fall and some units arriving in Minneapolis.
In western Montana the worst snowslides on record hit an 80 mile rail line, burying a mass of snow and rock. Four deaths near Adair were reported including Charles Nelson whose body is believed buried under 300 feet of debris. A prospector named Shores and his wife and brother were trapped to their cabin as others were buried but rescued. Rescue efforts drew workers from mining firms in Burkecamyom Idaho, while the Great Northern reported trouble in northern Montana with 12 feet of snow on level ground and 4 feet in 24 hours ending Wednesday night. The snow continued chilling the region as aid teams moved tons of snow away from mountain sides.
Fergus Falls Minnesota February 28 Train No 5 en route from St Paul to Whitten derailed four miles northwest of Fergus Falls. A broken rail toppled cars and the engine down an embankment. One fatality Charles Bohall of St Paul critical injuries. Several crew and postal workers severely hurt including Roy Ellingwood Frank Ed Reed William Scott John Pogreda and Mrs Leidal. Only one passenger injured.
Sad news from Latimer Iowa reports the death of Oscar Hanson’s two children. The Hanson couple, who had spent the winter visiting relatives in Iowa, buried their baby boy on February 26 and had lost an older son two weeks earlier. The city extends sympathy to the grieving parents.
A home talent concert at the MBE church runs tomorrow night starting at 8.00. An excellent program is planned and admission is 25 cents. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
