Senate introduces a bill by P. J. McCumber to extend payment time and release water users from charges for 1908 under the Williston irrigation project North Dakota. The measure aims to adjust construction and operation costs tied to federal reclamation laws and irrigation rules. Continued on page 10.
A. L. Burdick, congress candidate and former speaker, will move June 1 from Munich to Williston, quitting banking to practice law. He is cashier at Munich National Bank and had hinted at withdrawal amid a crowded eastern field, with political impact and regional congestion relief possible.
Fargo North Dakota mourns Col Warren C Plummer a veteran of the rebellion and long time newspaperman and politician who died yesterday in Maine. He served as lieutenant colonel and was briefly a colonel of volunteers and a candidate for Alaska governor. He leaves two daughters in Maine and was famed for his wit and street speaking in New York and Tammany era politics.
The Colonial dance staged Monday night for the Rebecca lodge benefit drew a large audience. Many dancers wore colonial costumes and the event was a decided success.
In Monday’s election the six per cent bond issue failed with ninety-two against and ten for. The question of recognizing city indebtedness passed sixty-one to forty-three. The council may call a new election at four per cent when the board meets. several members are away.
Farmers from Williams and McKenzie counties and Williston citizens meet at the court house on Monday February 28 at 2 pm. The program includes speeches by Williston officials and agriculture leaders and a discussion open to all farmers.
Boston reports the will of Charles Botsford, a Boston paper and twine wholesaler, provides over 100000 for educating North Dakota youth who sign a pledge to abstain from liquor tobacco and narcotics for life. Beneficiaries must study at Fargo College in North Dakota.

A weekend blaze destroyed most of The Kenmare News plant early Saturday. firemen prevented further damage to nearby structures. Owner and publisher W A Corbett reported the plant valued at about 3500 dollars with partial insurance.

In Washington on February 16, hearings before the senate agriculture committee drew strong opposition from Chicago Minneapolis and Baltimore boards of trade to the McCumber bill establishing federal grain inspection and uniform market grades. Opponents argued paternalism and constitutional concerns while supporters recall past grading reforms and warn that defeat could revert to harsher old methods. Senator McCumber accused buyers of giving farmers poor grades to raise profits and defraud farmers. If the bill passes the committee it will join the agricultural appropriation bill as an amendment.
