A 1909 law outlines cities may install ornamental street lighting on streets like Main and Broadway. Petitions signed by a majority of abutting property owners allow plans, with costs assessed to adjoining property, no separate districts needed, effective after March 12, 1909.
Mrs. A L Butler departs probate office for a two month vacation starting Saturday. Miss Dora Boyd will assume duties in her absence.
The Seattle Athletic Track team of seven passed through the city en route to the National meet. Mayor Jackson and locals greeted them at the train and presented a horse shoe decorated with club colors. The team later sent a formal vote of thanks to Mayor Jackson for the emblem and goodwill.
In a move that could revive rail expansion West of the Missouri River President Howard Elliott of the Northern Pacific visited the area to assess new lines into Mercer Dunn and McKenzie counties and a north extension from Mandan. Resumption of Great Northern work from Stanley to Wildrose and Soo railroad activity in the west river district are noted with possible Fort Berthold construction late this season or early next year. A Fordville Drake extension restart is also anticipated while a church communion will be held at the M E church next Sunday at 10 30.
Inspector G W Wilson of General Inspection Co told the city council last Saturday that, while current conditions are fair, enactment of several ordinances and new equipment could lift the city from four and a half to four class protection. He proposed wiring and stove pipe regulations, dry cleaning district relocation, condemnation powers for shacks, a 40 gallon chemical engine, new nozzle, tire bell, and a 600 foot hose cart, plus six inch mains in residence areas, noting the new pump helps reach best possible protection without a paid department.
Senator W. B. Overson traveled to Fargo for a Bankers convention. He spoke on the Development of Northwestern North Dakota and plans to return to the city later this week.
The Commercial club directors met last Friday to elect officers. A O Anderson was chosen president, M J Borden vice president, Wm Owens secretary, and R D Sutherland treasurer. The next meeting is set for tomorrow night at Odd Fellows hall with all members urged to attend.

Justice Daniel T. Wright ordered Samuel Gompers Frank Morrison and John Mitchell to show cause on July 17 why they should not be held in contempt. The action follows a report by a special committee on contempt in the Buck Stove and Range boycott proceedings. The U.S. Supreme Court reversed Wright’s prior jail sentences, ruling contempt was civil and tied to the Buck Stove case, but allowed the district court to reopen if further contempt is found.
The Williston Concert Band performed another fine concert Friday evening. The bandstand sits on the Metzger lots at Main and Broadway, with a lawn and trees making an ideal outdoor venue. Mr Metzger donated the city use of the lot for summer concerts, which have drawn growing crowds and positive reception.
The city equalization board completed the personal property list with valuation advances around $25,000 and now concentrates on real estate assessment.
The North Dakota Retail Merchants association will hold its annual convention in Minot on July 11 12 13. The program features addresses by prominent citizens a business session a smoker ball games band concerts auto and boat rides. John Bruegger will respond to the welcome address.
De Anges Vel held a business meeting on Wednesday evening and elected officers for six months. President J B Falkanger, Vice President Torgen Hofengen, Secretary Edna I Larsen, Treasurer Tilla Braaten. Refreshments followed with a social time enjoyed by all.
Miss Helen Vivian Maser of Spring Brook and Mr. Paul Ernest Steinke of Sargent Minnesota united in marriage yesterday morning June 28 in M E parsonage parlors. Attendants included Chas E Ulrich and Margaret Notman. They dined at the Cafe then departed for a northern tour and planned to visit Minot and Minnesota relatives before returning to live on a farm near Spring Brook.
The pastor will deliver morning sermon titled A Remembrance and a Proclamation and an evening message The Most Wonderful Religious Book. A hearty welcome to all attendees.
Editors from across the state returned Sunday and Monday, weary but satisfied after a Devils Lake meeting. Friday focused on business with papers read by many editors, including James Gray of the Minneapolis Journal. Social events and a picnic followed, with a baseball game pitting editors against Devils Lake lawyers, won by the editors 3 to 1.
The Sidney ball team arrived with a large crowd for a Sunday game against the local squad. Editor McGeary of Alexander umpired as the contest began at 8 welocks and the visitors won 2 to 1. The locals plan a return match at Culberts and a Fourth of July game with Alexander. Miss Edna Bell left Sunday to visit her sister in Great Falls Montana.
The Postal Saving Bank in Williston has opened and attracts many deposits. Although interest on deposits is small, people favor placing funds there because their money is absolutely safe as the banks are government controlled.
Fenwick Barnfather, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Barnfather, died at home west of the city after a track accident while training a horse for July races. The horse jolted and fell, fracturing his skull and causing fatal injuries. He was born March 15, 1892, and leaves a sister, a younger brother, and his parents. Funeral from the M. E. church this afternoon at 8 o'clock.
Elmo J. Brown and Ovidia M. Loken both of Mormon were married at noon yesterday at the Freeman home in this city. Rev. Hollett performed the ceremony in the presence of many friends. A wedding dinner followed. The couple will reside on the groom's farm near Mormon. The Graphic extends congratulations.
G L Bickford, former state treasurer, was found guilty of embezzling sixty thousand dollars after an eight day trial in Washburn North Dakota. The jury deliberated only a few hours before returning the verdict following the judge's final charge and closing arguments by the state.
